Nordic Semiconductor Unveils New nRF54L Series Bluetooth LE SoCs
Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low-power wireless connectivity solutions, has announced the expansion of its nRF54L series with the launch of two new System-on-Chip (SoC) models: the nRF54LS05A and the nRF54LS05B. Designed to cater to an array of applications, these Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) SoCs provide developers with the essential building blocks for creating cost-effective Bluetooth LE products.
Both the nRF54LS05A and nRF54LS05B serve as either the primary wireless SoC in single-chip systems or as complementary Bluetooth LE devices within multi-chip configurations. As industry frontrunners in Bluetooth LE technology, Nordic aims to empower developers by providing features that streamline product development while ensuring performance and reliability.
Key Features and Benefits
The nRF54LS05 series enhances the capabilities offered by the existing nRF54L lineup, delivering robust Bluetooth LE connectivity, ultra-low power consumption, and user-friendly software development tools. This optimization is essential for developers focusing on creating efficient end-products like sensors, tags, beacons, remote controls, and PC peripherals.
According to Øyvind Strøm, Nordic Semiconductor’s Executive Vice President for Short Range, “With the nRF54LS05A and nRF54LS05B, we aim to provide developers with a safe and straightforward starting point. By delivering the fundamental characteristics of our standard Bluetooth LE SoCs alongside our easy-to-handle software ecosystem, we are setting the stage for efficient and budget-conscious app development.”
The Nordic Edge
Utilizing these base-range Bluetooth LE SoCs ensures that developers will benefit from the same certified, fully functional Bluetooth LE stack that powers the entire nRF54L series. This guarantees robust and dependable Bluetooth LE communication, supported by Nordic's extensive experience as a key contributor to Bluetooth standards. Thousands of developers worldwide trust this seamless interoperability in their products.
Furthermore, Nordic’s well-established development ecosystem offers powerful tools and software, including the comprehensive nRF Connect SDK. The extensive documentation and hands-on training resources significantly expedite product development and reduce time to market. Moreover, Nordic’s nRF Cloud services add a secure, scalable framework for firmware updates and device management, bridging the gap from chip to cloud, and enhancing the value of the nRF Connect SDK.
Technical Specifications
The nRF54LS05A and nRF54LS05B provide optimized memory and peripherals, equipping developers with a sturdy and efficient base for product innovation. Integrating a 128 MHz Arm® Cortex® M33 processor with low-leakage RAM fosters efficient processing with quick responsiveness necessary for compact, low-power wireless designs.
Incorporating Nordic's fourth-generation Bluetooth LE radio, the SoCs also provide essential security features and pin-to-pin compatibility with select SoCs in the series for easy scalability. The nRF Connect SDK Bare Metal option allows smooth migration from the prior nRF52 series, making transitions straightforward for ongoing projects.
Both SoCs offer 0.5 MB of non-volatile memory (NVM); however, the nRF54LS05B features an increased amount of random access memory (RAM), providing 96 KB, compared to the 64 KB offered by the nRF54LS05A, catering to applications with greater demands.
The new nRF54LS05 series epitomizes Nordic Semiconductor’s cutting-edge approach to multiprotocol low-power SoCs, combining a next-gen 2.4 GHz radio with the Arm® Cortex®–M33 MCU. The series supports multiple wireless protocols including Bluetooth LE, Matter, Thread, Zigbee, and more, ensuring versatility for a diverse array of applications. Scalability, advanced analog/digital interfaces, and heightened security measures make the nRF54L series an ideal choice for developing integrated products on a single chip.
