Shanghai Electric Showcases the Power of Integration at WFES 2026
Shanghai Electric, a prominent player in the energy sector, marked its significant presence at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2026, which commenced at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center. Under the theme "The Power of Integration," the company showcased an array of full-scenario energy solutions designed to fuel the Middle East's transition towards a greener future.
The Middle East is rich in oil and gas, coupled with vast solar energy potential, yet it grapples with water scarcity, thus complicating its energy transition journey. WFES, being one of the largest renewable energy events in the MENA region, serves as a vital platform for industry stakeholders, policymakers, and technology pioneers to tackle the pressing challenges of energy transition and promote sustainable practices.
Zhu Weiwen, Deputy Director of Marketing at Shanghai Electric Power Generation Group, emphasized that energy transition transcends the mere amalgamation of technologies, stating, "It is a system-level undertaking. Shanghai Electric positions itself as a system integrator, focusing on high-penetration renewable integration, grid stability, green fuel production, and industrial decarbonization as interconnected elements. This holistic approach enables us to formulate actionable transition pathways for our clients in the Middle East."
At their exhibition, Shanghai Electric employed an immersive, scenario-based design to showcase four integrated solution zones that encapsulate the entire energy value chain—from generation and storage to conversion and efficient utilization.
Integrated Solar and Water Zone
In the Integrated Solar and Water zone, Shanghai Electric highlighted notable projects such as the Dubai Solar Park. This segment illustrated how concentrated solar power and photovoltaic systems can work in tandem with energy storage solutions to ensure a reliable 24-hour electricity supply. Furthermore, the zone displayed the company’s advanced seawater desalination capacities, featuring both thermal-based multi-effect distillation (MED) and membrane-based reverse osmosis (RO) technologies.
Grid Support and Hybrid Storage Zone
The Grid Support and Hybrid Storage zone focused on enhancing grid stability amidst high renewable penetration levels. A flagship solution on display was the integration of flywheel energy storage with a synchronous condenser, providing critical inertia support and facilitating rapid frequency regulation. This cutting-edge solution has been successfully implemented in various projects, including the Penasco photovoltaic power plant in Mexico.
Power-to-X and Hydrogen Energy Zone
In the Power-to-X and Hydrogen Energy zone, Shanghai Electric introduced its Bristack® series electrolyzers, which lead the industry with an impressive energy consumption rate of 3.94 kWh/Nm³. Attendees also had the chance to explore a scale model of the Taonan Green Methanol Demonstration Project, China's pioneering large-scale green methanol initiative that integrates wind-generated hydrogen with biomass technologies. This project has achieved full-process ISCC EU certification, highlighting its environmental credibility.
Zero-Carbon Industrial Parks Zone
The Zero-Carbon Industrial Parks zone provided insight into strategies for high-energy-consuming industrial areas to transition towards low-carbon operations. This transformation is facilitated through the synergy of high-efficiency industrial turbines and advanced energy management systems, driving system-level improvements in efficiency and enabling smart dispatch capabilities.
Shanghai Electric's booth showcased a multitude of successful projects, reinforcing its capability to deliver intricate, cross-regional integrated energy systems. These projects range from the 2 GW AI Sadawi Photovoltaic Project in Saudi Arabia, the Safi Seawater Desalination Project in Morocco, to the Pancevo Gas-Fired Power Plant in Serbia and the Taonan Green Methanol Project in China.
On the inaugural day of the summit, Shanghai Electric also hosted several technical roadshows, shedding light on critical regional topics such as energy-desalination coupling, green fuels, and grid stability, which garnered substantial interest from industry professionals. By acting as a trusted energy system partner, Shanghai Electric remains committed to harnessing the region's abundant natural resources, channeling them into sustainable and reliable energy solutions for the future.
