QNX Reaches a New Milestone: Over 275 Million Vehicles
In a significant announcement made on December 16, 2025, BlackBerry Limited's division, QNX, has declared that its QNX® software is now embedded in more than 275 million vehicles globally. This impressive figure represents an increase of 100 million vehicles since 2020, according to Counterpoint Research, a leading technology analysis and market research firm.
As automotive manufacturers navigate a transformative phase, the transition to software-defined vehicles (SDVs) is accelerating. Software has become a central component driving innovation, safety, and in-car experiences. Consequently, the traditional approaches to vehicle design, manufacturing, and maintenance are being redefined, making robust and scalable software platforms like QNX increasingly essential to OEMs worldwide.
Leading the Charge in the SDV Era
QNX offers a comprehensive range of solutions that empower OEMs to accelerate development and adhere to production start schedules. These solutions include a deterministic microkernel real-time operating system (RTOS) and hypervisor, board support packages (BSPs), professional services, and AUTOSAR Adaptive support, along with middleware developed for various applications such as sound management, digital cockpit, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
Prominent OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, including Toyota, Honda, BMW, Bosch, Continental, Dongfeng Motor, Geely, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Volvo, trust QNX as the foundational element supporting a software-led future.
John Wall, the President of QNX, stated, “The reason why QNX is trusted by automotive manufacturers is that we provide the most important values of safety, security, and proven reliability. With over 275 million vehicles equipped with QNX technology, our journey has just begun. As software continues to underpin modern mobility, QNX will further its presence and support the next generation of connected and autonomous vehicles.”
Greg Basich, Associate Director of Automotive at Counterpoint Research, also commented, “The automotive industry continues to evolve rapidly, with software playing an increasingly vital role in vehicle functionality, safety, and user experience. As the importance of embedded platforms grows, especially for ADAS and digital cockpits, the focus on proven scalable technologies is increasing. The expanding adoption of QNX reflects broader market trends demanding robust real-time operating systems that meet the stringent requirements of modern vehicles.”
Supporting QNX’s Growth Initiatives
Last year, QNX introduced its platform for virtualizing digital cockpit development in the cloud called
QNX® Cabin. Furthermore, to enhance development efficiency for SDVs and simplify the complexity of in-vehicle software integration, QNX announced a collaboration with Vector to launch the
Foundational Vehicle Software Platform.
Counterpoint Research calculates the number of QNX® software units based on the production shipments of QNX® products and the count of vehicles employing QNX technology. Most vehicle electronic control units (ECUs) using QNX software are licensed on a per-unit royalty basis.
