Skanska Initiates Major North Station Draw One Bridge Replacement Project in Massachusetts Worth $1 Billion
Skanska Takes on Massive Bridge Replacement in Massachusetts
Skanska AB, a prominent construction firm based in Sweden, has recently entered into a significant contract worth $1 billion with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). This contract is aimed at replacing the North Station Draw One Bridge and implementing crucial upgrades to the associated tracks and signals across the interconnected areas of Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville. The financial magnitude of this venture translates to approximately SEK 9.3 billion and is slated to be recorded in the U.S. order bookings in the second quarter of 2026.
The scope of this ambitious design-build project includes tearing down the existing bascule bridges, originally constructed in the 1930s, and replacing them with advanced vertical lift spans. Additionally, the project will entail significant upgrades such as the enhancement of approach trestles, building a new Tower A control facility, and the installation of an extra Platform F at North Station. This overall infrastructure overhaul aims to improve both the effectiveness and safety of the region's train services, supporting the needs of over 100,000 commuters who utilize the MBTA's services every day.
To ensure minimal disruption during construction, the project will feature integrated advancements in track, signal systems, and Positive Train Control (PTC). These improvements will facilitate uninterrupted service for commuter rail and Amtrak passengers throughout all construction phases. As part of the upgrade, alternatives focusing on minimizing in-water work will be explored to simplify staging while also enhancing safety standards. Remarkably, the project is expected to expand the track capacity across the Charles River from four to six tracks, which will be pivotal in accommodating the growing volume of commuters.
Work is anticipated to commence in May 2026, with a projected completion date set for Fall 2032. The intricate planning and execution of this project are expected to significantly benefit the local transit infrastructure, ensuring that the bridge meets modern demands while enhancing the overall resiliency of the transportation network in the Greater Boston area.
Maritza Ferreira, Skanska USA’s Vice President of Communications, emphasized the importance of the project, stating that the new bridge is set to vastly improve transit reliability and service quality for countless daily riders. Furthermore, Andreas Joons, a press officer for Skanska, confirmed that the company will make continued efforts to communicate updates regarding the project’s progression and public impact.
As the project unfolds, Skanska is set to not only lead a major infrastructure upgrade but also demonstrate its commitment to fostering improved transportation experiences for communities dependent on reliable transit solutions. With a history of handling large-scale projects, Skanska's involvement in this bridge replacement reinforces its position as a key player in today's evolving construction industry. Expect regular updates as work begins and progresses, ensuring that the project stays aligned with the needs and expectations of the public it aims to serve.
