Tetra Pak Begins Revolutionary Recycling Initiative in Okinawa
An Important Step for Environmental Sustainability
Tetra Pak, a major supplier of food processing machinery and paper container filling systems, has announced an exciting new initiative in Okinawa Prefecture. On June 1, 2026, the company will commence a demonstration project at the Aeon Haebaru Store to collect aluminum-filled paper containers, marking the first such recycling effort in Okinawa. This endeavor will allow local consumers to participate in recycling directly at their shopping destination.
Challenges with Aluminum-Filled Paper Containers
Aluminum-filled paper containers, commonly used for products like soy milk and vegetable juices, incorporate layers that protect the contents from light and oxygen. Unfortunately, despite their recyclability, the recovery rate for these containers has been unacceptably low. Many were previously disposed of as burnable waste due to the lack of adequate recycling facilities in the region. The limited collection points made it difficult for consumers to recycle these containers effectively.
Launching the Recycling Initiative
To counter these barriers, Tetra Pak partnered with Aeon to install collection boxes for aluminum-filled containers at the store. This development will provide a convenient opportunity for customers shopping at Aeon Haebaru to return their used containers, enhancing community engagement in sustainability efforts.
Tetra Pak has embarked on similar initiatives across areas such as Kanto, Kinki, and Tokai, expanding collection points in collaboration with supermarkets and recycling businesses. The project at Aeon Haebaru is seen as a pivotal first step towards promoting recycling in Okinawa, as the company continues to create more opportunities for consumer participation.
Integration with Aeon’s “E-rabou” Fair
