Tsukuba's Environmental Initiative
The city of Tsukuba recently hosted the ‘Cleanliness Challenge x Sports GOMI’ event, drawing in 144 local residents who collectively gathered an impressive 48.3 kilograms of litter. This unique initiative merges sports and environmental awareness, allowing participants to engage in a competitive cleanup.
Event Overview
On March 14, 2026, at the Tsukuba Center Plaza, teams of participants scoured the designated area, from the Tsukuba Center to the Takezono West Park. The innovative concept of
Sports GOMI involves dividing participants into teams where they compete to collect trash, with points awarded based on both the quality and quantity of waste gathered.
The event kicked off with an opening ceremony featuring Tsukuba's mascot, Captain Hukun. 38 teams enthusiastically entered the competition, showcasing their strategies as they raced against the clock for one hour. The friendly rivalry led to a total of 48.3 kg of waste being collected, underscoring the commitment of the community toward environmental stewardship.

Fun and Thrill for All
Participants ranged from children to adults, eager to make a difference while competing for prizes sponsored by local businesses. After the competition, the closing ceremony celebrated the efforts of the top teams with awards and applause, highlighting the communal spirit fostered during the event.
