David Barden Takes on Leadership Role at New Street Research in Telecom Sector
On September 29, 2025, New Street Research announced the strategic appointment of David Barden as Partner and Head of the North America Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure research team. With over 30 years of extensive experience in global sell-side research, Barden brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role, having most recently served as the Head of U.S. and Canada Communications Research at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. He has been recognized as one of the top analysts in the field, highlighted by a double Institutional Investor All-America ranking in 2024.
Barden succeeds Jonathan Chaplin, who held the position since 2012 and oversaw the firm’s transition into a leading independent research entity, covering the entire Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) landscape. Chaplin will be shifting to Comcast as the Executive Vice President of Strategy and Investments for the Connectivity Platforms division.
Iain Johnston, Chairman of New Street Research, expressed confidence in Barden's capabilities, asserting, "David is an outstanding analyst, recognized across multiple investor surveys for the value he delivers to the buy-side. His breadth of experience will significantly expand our coverage in both equity and high-yield products and further strengthen our global communications research franchise."
In his new role, Barden is poised to broaden the firm's established team's influence, which includes analysts such as Phil Burnett, Vikash Harlalka, and Bruno Marin. His focus will be on enhancing client engagement, expanding coverage, and improving corporate access, in close collaboration with Blair Levin on policy and regulatory research. Furthermore, he will work with José Javier Anguis Horno and the data analytics team to develop proprietary datasets that will provide critical insights to clients.
"Joining New Street Research is a thrilling opportunity," Barden stated. "I have long admired the firm’s independence and its commitment to offering original, high-quality insights for institutional clients. I look forward to building on our already strong global platform, broadening coverage, and helping clients navigate the rapidly evolving digital infrastructure landscape."
Chaplin echoed the sentiment, stating, “Over the past decade, we’ve built an incredible team and developed a unique approach to research distinguished by uncommon insights delivered to clients that invest across the capital structure in public and private markets. With David's leadership, new relationships, and fresh perspectives, I am confident the team's best work lies ahead. Our clients will find even greater value in the next chapter of New Street's growth."
