T2 Selected for Autonomous Trucking Project by Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism

T2 Selected for Groundbreaking Autonomous Trucking Initiative

In a significant development towards advancing autonomous logistics in Japan, T2, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has been selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's project focused on implementing autonomous trucks for trunk transportation. This initiative is crucial as Japan faces a severe shortage of truck drivers, which is exacerbating logistics challenges across the nation.

With a goal looking towards 2027, T2 aims to initiate trunk transportation services utilizing level 4 autonomous trucks, which will operate without human drivers on highways. To pave the way for this revolutionary shift, T2 has already commenced commercial operations with level 2 autonomous trucks from July this year. These steps are part of T2's broader strategy to enhance the logistics industry by transitioning to self-driving technology, thereby addressing the ongoing driver shortages.

The project funded by the Ministry involves substantial financial support for private companies committed to integrating autonomous trucks for trunk transport. This includes covering half of the costs associated with vehicle acquisition and the establishment of switching hubs. These hubs are essential as they will allow drivers to transition between manually-driven vehicles and autonomous trucks safely. This dual-mode operation is critical as it bridges the current gap between traditional transportation methods and the future of logistics.

T2 is particularly focused on maximizing this funding to facilitate the adoption of new autonomous trucks for further trials and to bolster the establishment of switching hubs across various locations in Japan. This strategic emphasis will significantly accelerate T2's journey towards realizing level 4 autonomous transportation services by the target date of 2027.

Apart from improving operational efficiency and addressing the pressing shortages in the logistics workforce, this move is indicative of Japan's broader ambition to integrate cutting-edge technologies into everyday transport solutions. As logistics demand grows, T2’s role as a pioneer in autonomous systems will be pivotal in shaping the future landscape of freight transportation in Japan.
