Discover the Innovative Wood Utilization Project in Machida City
Machida City, situated about 30 minutes from central Tokyo, is making significant strides towards a sustainable future with its Wood Utilization Project, appropriately named “Machida no Ki.” With a population of approximately 430,000, Machida merges urban conveniences with the natural beauty of surrounding greenery and agricultural lands, providing a unique living environment.
Background of the Project
In April 2024, Machida City formulated a strategy aimed at realizing a decarbonized society, titled “Promotion Policy for the Use of Tamagawa Timber and Other Local Resources in Public Buildings.” This initiative is focused on actively utilizing domestically sourced timber, particularly from the Tama region. The “Machida no Ki” project is a key effort under this policy, emphasizing the importance of showcasing the potential of locally-sourced wood and bamboo from activities like satoyama management and road maintenance, thus ensuring these materials are put to good use rather than discarded.
