Invox Launches 'Invox's Forest'
Invox Inc., headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has recently unveiled its forest conservation and regeneration project known as 'Invox's Forest'. This initiative focuses on leveraging carbon credits to support forest owners comprehensively—from credit creation to utilization and profit-sharing.
Background of the Project
Forests play a crucial role in absorbing CO₂, preventing natural disasters, and preserving biodiversity, making them indispensable for maintaining the Earth's environment. Despite their importance, the forestry sector has been facing challenges, leading to inadequate management in many forests and an increasing number of unknown ownerships. In response, the Forest Management Act was implemented in 2019 to address these issues through municipal management delegations and securing financial resources via forest environment taxes. However, insufficient personnel and budgets hinder adequate management.
Understanding Carbon Credits
Carbon credits serve as a trading mechanism by transforming CO₂ reduction and absorption amounts into tradable credits. This economic incentive allows forest owners to gain new financial resources by enhancing their CO₂ absorption through sustainable forest management practices, thereby promoting environmental conservation. Nevertheless, the challenges of initial costs and the unpredictability of sale timelines pose significant barriers, particularly for smaller forest owners who may express interest but face difficulties in planning.
Overview of 'Invox's Forest'
Under the 'Invox's Forest' initiative, the company commits to covering all expenses related to the creation of carbon credits. The credits generated will be sold through the 'Invox Carbon Accounting' service to businesses engaged in carbon offsetting. In scenarios where profits are generated from sales, these will be shared with the forest owners. This structure aims to minimize risks for forest owners, facilitating easier planning and enabling more forest owners to engage in preservation and regeneration activities.
Collaboration with Local Partners
Recently, Invox has partnered with the Co-Design Research Institute for Local Creation to expand the creation and utilization of J-Credits for forests managed by municipalities. This partnership aims to foster J-Credit initiatives within small forests and those under municipal management, which have previously found implementation challenging. Local governments can now utilize sales revenues from J-Credits to enhance forest management.
