New Survey Highlights the Importance of Plasma-Derived Medicines and Donors

A recent global survey has shed light on the critical role that plasma-derived medicines play in the lives of patients and their families. Conducted by the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA) and analyzed by SSRS, the study reveals that an astonishing 69% of participants noticed a shift in their health or that of someone they care about shortly after beginning treatment with plasma-derived therapies.

This survey was particularly significant as it coincided with International Plasma Awareness Week (IPAW), held from October 5-9, during which efforts are made to honor plasma donors. The findings suggest a deep appreciation among patients for those who contribute to this essential medical resource. An impressive 77% of respondents expressed gratitude toward plasma donors, highlighting the human connection behind medical treatments.

The Impact of Plasma-Derived Medicines

The research involved over 1,100 participants, including patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and advocates. Notably, about two-thirds of those surveyed indicated that they or their loved ones received plasma-derived treatments at least once a month, and 41% reported weekly treatments.

Many of the respondents rely on these medicines to manage serious health conditions, with nearly half using them for primary immunodeficiencies. Other conditions addressed by these therapies include bleeding disorders, neurological issues, and lung-related illnesses. Interestingly, almost half of those who participated in the survey began their treatment at ages ranging from 36 to 64 years.

It’s heartening to note that over two-thirds of respondents reported feeling an improvement in their health within a few months of starting their plasma-derived medicine, with some experiencing changes within days of beginning treatment. This swift response underscores the life-changing potential of plasma therapies.

Voices of Patients and Caregivers

Christy Savino, who relies on plasma-derived medication for her immunodeficiency condition, shared, "We get to make memories together as a family because of plasma. This amazing gift of life is with us every single moment of every day and travels with us wherever we go." This sentiment captures the essence of how plasma-derived therapies contribute not just to individual health, but to the overall fabric of family life and relationships.

Moreover, the confidence in these treatments is evident among patients, as 87% expressed a strong belief in the safety and effectiveness of plasma-derived medicines. Jorey Berry, President and CEO of the Immune Deficiency Foundation, emphasized the need for public recognition of the contributions made by plasma donors. He stated, "For so many patients, plasma-derived medicines aren't just treatments; they're what help make everyday life possible. That's why every plasma donation matters so deeply."

Celebrating Donors During IPAW

International Plasma Awareness Week serves as a crucial reminder of the significance of plasma donors and the impact of their contributions to countless lives. By shining a light on the stories of those who depend on plasma-derived medicines, this initiative encourages more individuals to consider becoming donors.

Through initiatives like IPAW and surveys like this, the connection between plasma donors and the patients whose lives they touch is being firmly established. With a growing understanding of the need for plasma-derived medicines, the hope is that more individuals will recognize the profound difference their donation can make.
