Securus Technologies Joins Forces to Combat Human Trafficking in Santa Clara
In a proactive move to support and protect the Santa Clara community, Securus Technologies has teamed up with the national anti-trafficking organization, In Our Backyard (IOB), to address the urgent issue of human trafficking, particularly during high-traffic events such as large sporting occasions. This collaboration comes at a crucial time, as human trafficking is not just a covert crime but one that intensifies during periods of increased travel, temporary employment, and economic activity.
In 2024, the National Human Trafficking Hotline reported over 9,600 cases of trafficking across the United States, affecting more than 16,000 individuals. California, in particular, has seen a stark increase in reported trafficking incidents, with over 1,300 cases noted in the previous year. Recognizing this alarming trend, local agencies knew they needed to take measures to protect vulnerable individuals before potential exploitation could occur.
Securus Technologies and IOB have been collaborating for more than eight years, focusing on equipping local law enforcement and community members with the tools they need to prevent trafficking. Ahead of the highly viewed sporting event in February, the two organizations conducted extensive training sessions, public awareness campaigns, and secure communication systems that enabled first responders to identify signs of trafficking effectively.
During the weeks leading up to the event, more than 250 law enforcement officials, social services providers, and community volunteers were trained in spotting trafficking indicators and organizing swift response efforts. One of the highlight initiatives involved the distribution of 10,000 Missing Children Booklets featuring 36 missing youths, which reached approximately 50,000 individuals throughout the region and bolstered public reporting channels.
The outreach proved to be crucial, as notably more than half of the missing children were reported found and returned home safely shortly after these efforts began. Cheryl Csiky, Executive Director of IOB, emphasized the importance of raising awareness: "Prevention starts with visibility and coordination. When communities are informed, prepared, and connected, they can identify victims earlier and assist more children in getting home safely. Each recovery signifies a life that has been spared from further harm and a step towards healing."
As the event took place, IOB played a significant role by assisting in the recovery of 73 victims, generating 65 verified leads in ongoing investigations across Santa Clara. Kevin Elder, President of Securus Technologies, remarked, "Our mission is to empower communities to act more swiftly and effectively when they see warning signs of trafficking. By integrating technology, training, and established partnerships, we can disrupt trafficking networks, aid law enforcement, and crucially, help victims find safety and a path to recovery."
The Santa Clara initiative stands apart from standard one-off awareness campaigns due to its focus on creating a lasting regional capacity. IOB employs a survivor-informed curriculum that equips first responders to recognize signs of exploitation in everyday situations while engaging with victims in a manner that prioritizes their safety, dignity, and long-term recovery needs.
Ultimately, the collaboration in Santa Clara exemplifies how enduring partnerships, which are grounded in community involvement, data-driven coordination, and secure sharing of information, can significantly bolster public safety and shield vulnerable populations. This comprehensive approach not only aims to protect individuals during major events but also seeks to carry this momentum forward to create safer communities over the long term.
