Satisfaction with Living Conditions and Neighborhood Relations in Japan's Young Adults Shows Decline

Satisfaction with Living Conditions and Neighborhood Relations

In December 2025, Cross Marketing conducted a nationwide survey focused on living conditions and community relations in Japan. This survey involved 3,000 participants aged 18 to 79, aiming to capture changing lifestyles and perceptions about home and surroundings.

Home Satisfaction Rates

The results indicated that overall satisfaction with current homes stands at 64%, while satisfaction with surrounding environments is slightly higher at 66%. Interestingly, among individuals in their 30s and 40s, satisfaction rates fall to around 50%. In contrast, those aged 70 and above report a satisfaction exceeding 70%, suggesting a significant generational difference.

Dissatisfaction Factors

Concerns regarding surrounding environments included issues like poor transportation accessibility, safety, lack of essential services, and feelings of community decline. Many residents also reported frustrations over superficial or minimal social interactions with neighbors.

Communication with Neighbors

When examining communication with neighbors, it was found that a significant portion of respondents, at 44%, only engage in brief greetings when they happen to meet. Additionally, 26% admitted they do not even know their neighbors. For younger participants aged 18 to 29, this figure rose to 40%, highlighting a trend towards introversion in neighborhood interactions. Conversely, among the 70s demographic, 40% reported having more meaningful exchanges, such as occasional chats or friendly greetings.

Ideal Interaction Scenarios

When asking residents about their ideal interaction levels, 66% preferred a scenario where greetings were the extent of their communication. Younger individuals, particularly those in their 20s and 30s, displayed a preference for avoiding social contact altogether, with approximately 20% desiring to ignore neighbors entirely.

Home Attitudes and Preferences

One of the standout findings from the survey pertains to residents' preferences for housing features. A whopping 80% of respondents expressed a strong desire to live in structurally secure homes equipped with earthquake resistance measures. Close behind, 72% prioritized homes that offer comprehensive security systems against theft and fire.

Other notable preferences included a desire for larger houses that allow privacy for family members, or homes equipped to accommodate future accessibility needs. Interestingly, younger respondents showed a higher inclination towards maintenance-free living; many preferred homes without gardens due to the hassle of upkeep and concerns over pests.

Conclusion

The survey conducted by Cross Marketing indicates a notable disconnect and dissatisfaction among certain demographics in Japan when it comes to their living conditions and relationships with neighbors. As younger generations express a desire for less interaction, understanding these trends will be crucial for developers and local governments aiming to create neighborhoods that foster a stronger sense of community.
