Everblue Technologies, based in Chofu City, Tokyo, has made waves in the field of drone technology by announcing the prototype of their sailboat drone, designated AST-201 spec1.4 with Windmill Sail. Developed in collaboration with Nabtesco, a company known for its cutting-edge motion control technologies, this project is focused on the practical application of next-generation wind propulsion systems, specifically the groundbreaking 'Windmill Sail.' This innovative drone will be showcased at the Japan Drone 2025 event held from June 4 to June 6, 2025.

The AST-201 spec1.4 is a lightweight craft, measuring 1.4 meters in length and weighing 14 kilograms. It integrates the Windmill Sail, a unique cylindrical wind propulsion device that generates thrust using wind power and the Magnus effect. Compared to traditional sails, the Windmill Sail is notable for its compact size, high output, and simple structure, which allows it to not only provide propulsion but also generate electricity.

Equipped for zero-emission navigation, the AST-201 spec1.4 is ideal for prolonged offshore research, observation tasks, and the study of renewable energy systems independent of energy sources. In addition to remote control operation, the drone is designed to accommodate autonomous navigation capabilities in the future.

Significance and Purpose of the Development



The global imperative for decarbonization in maritime transportation has been underlined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which has set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Within this context, Everblue Technologies has committed to addressing these challenges through the development of innovative sailboat drones. The high operational costs associated with fuel in maritime operations necessitate energy-efficient and high-performance wind propulsion technologies.

Everblue has dedicated years to resolving these challenges, leading to the necessity for more stable, long-duration flight capabilities, particularly under adverse weather conditions. The Windmill Sail technology, developed by Nabtesco, features a unique design that combines characteristics from cylindrical sails and vertical-axis wind turbines, resulting in both electricity generation and propulsion via wind-induced rotation. While its potential applications span from small drones to large tankers, this collaboration focuses initially on developing a small-scale demonstrator model to understand future demands.

Future Outlook



Future plans include testing the windmill sail's propulsion efficiency, power generation capacity, and autonomous navigation techniques through real-world maritime trials. This project envisions the deployment of energy-independent marine robotics capable of monitoring the environment, disaster surveillance, and more, powered by renewable energy.

Furthermore, this initiative has received recognition under the NEDO program, which promotes energy-saving technologies aimed at realizing a decarbonized society. The partnership between Everblue Technologies and Nabtesco seeks to accelerate the development of next-generation marine mobility solutions that leverage wind propulsion and power generation.
