Jamie Johnson's Unique Insights on Irish Travellers: A Captivating Exhibition in New York

Leica Gallery New York is set to unveil a thought-provoking solo exhibition titled Growing Up Travelling by renowned documentary photographer Jamie Johnson, commencing on July 16, 2026. This exhibition not only presents photographs from Johnson's celebrated monograph, which had previously sold out, but also introduces new and unpublished works that delve deeper into the lives of children within the Irish Traveller community.

Johnson's work, which spans over a decade, emphasizes the experiences of Irish Travellers, an indigenous ethnic minority in Ireland known for their rich cultural heritage and oral traditions. As a community, they have faced persistent discrimination and social exclusion. Through her consistent efforts and close engagement with their lives, Johnson has forged strong relationships with the community, ultimately leading to a body of work that presents a heartfelt perspective on childhood, identity, and belonging.

The Growing Up Travelling exhibition highlights not only the lives of children whom Johnson first photographed years ago but also their journeys into adulthood. Through her lens, viewers can witness moments of joy, resilience, and tenderness that contribute to a multi-faceted portrayal of a community often misunderstood or ignored. Johnson aims to break stereotypes, inviting audiences to experience the individual stories and humanity of her subjects through intimate visual storytelling.

In Johnson’s words, "Over the years, I have traveled back and forth to Ireland, returning again and again to photograph many of the same children as they grow up. This project started as a series of images but quickly evolved into lasting friendships and a commitment to documenting a community that welcomed me into their lives."

At the heart of the exhibition lies an exploration of childhood as a universal experience, shaped by culture, tradition, and environment. As both a mother and a documentary photographer, Johnson approaches her work with empathy and curiosity, addressing the complexities of growing up in a world that is rapidly changing. Reflecting on her experiences, Johnson notes, "Each time I return, things have changed, yet the relationships remain. The children I first photographed years ago are now young adults, and new generations continue to grow up before my lens."

Through Growing Up Travelling, Johnson captures a vivid visual narrative of a living culture, celebrating the dignity, humor, and spirit of the families she has documented. This exhibition serves as both a crucial documentary archive and a testament to photography's power to bridge understanding across diverse communities.

To mark the exhibition's opening, Leica Gallery will host a reception on July 16 from 6 PM to 8 PM, allowing guests to view the exhibition and engage with the artist. Additionally, on July 21 at 6:30 PM, Johnson will converse with Michael Foley, the Director of Leica Gallery New York, discussing the personal narratives and experiences reflected in her photographs. These events underline the gallery's dedication to celebrating the art of visual storytelling and fostering connections between exceptional photographers and their audiences.

The gallery operates from 10 AM to 6 PM Monday to Saturday, and from 12 PM to 5 PM on Sundays. It is located at 406 W 13th St., New York, NY 10014. Further details about the exhibition can be found on leica-camera.com.
