Exploring 5,000 Years of Magic: An International Journey in Hangzhou

A Journey Through Time: Unveiling Hangzhou's Ancient Legacy

In June 2025, Hangzhou became the center of cultural exploration as ten international scholars and influencers gathered to discover the city's rich heritage. This immersive experience, organized by the Hangzhou International Communication Center, highlighted 5,000 years of magic and history, showcasing the seamless blend of past and present.

Among the participants was American historian David Ringo Miano, who expressed his astonishment upon witnessing a perfect jade disc at the Liangzhu Museum, a relic from the region’s ancient civilization. Miano exclaimed, "More spectacular than I could have ever imagined!" His sentiment resonated with other attendees as they explored the archaeological wonders of Liangzhu, where they encountered a beautifully crafted black pottery jar adorned with cryptic symbols.

Greek anthropologist Christina Papageorgopoulou noted the intriguing parallels between the motifs on the jar and those found in contemporary Greek pottery, highlighting the interconnectedness of different cultures throughout history. Similarly, Egyptian curator Remonda Fayez Michel felt a spiritual kinship with the region's ancient hydraulic engineering, drawing comparisons to the achievements of her own civilization in harnessing river systems.

The enchanting landscapes of Hangzhou, particularly the fog-kissed West Lake, became a source of inspiration for Italian documentary filmmaker Leonardo Cinieri Lombroso. Captivated by the scenic beauty, he remarked how the landscape could be likened to a cinematic marvel, echoing the sentiments of Turkish journalist Tunç Akkoç, who recited verses by the Chinese poet Su Shi. "Poetry breathes life into these waters," he observed, emphasizing the cultural depth surrounding the lake.

In the Tea Museum, Thai conductor Kittiporn Tantrarungroj explored the origins of tea culture, artfully creating the character "Chen" with matcha foam. German photographer Gunther Riehle documented the emerald tea terraces under the gentle rain, capturing the essence of Hangzhou’s tea industry.

As they meandered through the ancient canals, Canadian influencer Angelina Hui Qing Zhang embraced the vibrant history of the area, adorned in a traditional Hanfu from the Song dynasty. Meanwhile, Brazilian lawyer Renato de Almeida Freitas Junior filmed the intricate models of boats at the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Museum, proclaiming the engineering marvel to be worthy of global recognition.

The experience culminated in a stunning spectacle at Qiandao Lake, where a giant fishing net demonstration showcased the area’s historical fishing practices. As 15 tons of silver carp splashed from the water, Riehle exclaimed, “This leap symbolizes the vitality of Hangzhou!” Reflecting on ecological harmony, international school director Francisca Molinero marveled at how the city balances urban development with nature.

The event was not just about exploring the past and present but also fostering dialogue among civilizations. Scholars representing various fields engaged in discussions bridging Eastern and Western perspectives on culture.

On the final day, participants were paired with five local families, diving into an authentic experience of Hangzhou life. They hosted a farewell banquet by the lake, partaking in a “Moveable Feast,” where they prepared dishes from their homelands alongside local chefs, further weaving the intricate tapestry of cultural exchange.

As the dialogues continued to flow like the Grand Canal beneath ancient bridges, there is a palpable anticipation for future collaborations that could resonate across oceans, hinting at the possibility of cultural symphonies echoing around the world. This event in Hangzhou stands as a testament to the beauty of diversity, connection, and the shared human experience that transcends borders.
