Skanska Engages in Major Groundwork for Beccs Facility in Stockholm

In a significant advancement for carbon management, Skanska has entered into a contract valued at approximately SEK 990 million with Stockholm Exergi to undertake foundation work and construct a quay for the forthcoming Beccs facility in Stockholm, Sweden. This initiative marks a pivotal step towards the establishment of one of the world's premier facilities dedicated to capturing and permanently storing biogenic carbon dioxide.

The contract encompasses essential groundwork for the Beccs Stockholm facility, which will be strategically located in Energihamnen, Värtan. This site is particularly noteworthy as it is adjacent to Värtaverket, a power plant already recognized for generating sustainable heat and electricity from wood industry residues. With this new Beccs facility, Stockholm Exergi aims to add CO2 capture and storage capabilities, thereby enhancing its commitment to addressing climate change.

Upon completion, the Beccs facility is expected to capture and store around 800,000 tons of CO2 annually, significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with emissions from the Värtaverket biomass plant. The signing of this contract is a continuation of Skanska's ongoing collaboration with Stockholm Exergi, following an initial agreement for Phase 1 of the project. The new contract extends into Phase 2, which includes vital groundwork and concrete work for the facility.

Groundwork is set to commence immediately, with a completion target established for 2028. The Beccs technology employed in this project, known as Bio-CCS (Bio Energy Carbon Capture and Storage), operates by capturing biogenic CO2 emissions before they are released into the atmosphere.
