BLUETTI and UN-Habitat Strengthen Clean Energy Access in Africa
A Renewed Commitment to Clean Energy in Africa
In a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions, BLUETTI, a global leader in clean energy technology, has strengthened its partnership with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to accelerate access to renewable energy across Africa. This collaboration builds on the ongoing "Lighting An African Family" (LAAF) initiative, which has been operational in Kenya for four years, bringing electricity benefits to over 500 families and impacting more than 2000 residents in underserved urban and peri-urban areas where many households are led by women.
LAAF Initiative in Action
The LAAF program commenced in Muhoroni, Kenya, where BLUETTI has provided essential renewable energy support and training. The initiative aims to educate local communities on sustainable energy practices and improve their living conditions through reliable energy solutions. During the Decentralization 2025 conference held from August 12 to 15 in Kenya, BLUETTI showcased how affordable and clean energy solutions can contribute to housing development, urban resilience, and the implementation of smart city strategies. This conference emphasized a collective commitment among participants, institutions, and the Kenyan government to position clean energy as a cornerstone for a sustainable future.
Focused Community Engagement
Following the success of prior efforts, the renewed partnership will focus on two urban areas in the rapidly growing peri-urban region of Muhoroni, Kisumu County, as well as informal settlements in EX-Grogon and Mathare in central Nairobi. BLUETTI is set to provide training and facilitate technology transfer, having donated 500 E60 solar kits for lighting and energy storage that significantly enhance the quality of life for those over 2000 residents. Over the next five years, this initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions by 337.5 tons while promoting urban resilience and environmental awareness within these communities.
A Shared Vision for Sustainability
Oumar Sylla, the Director of UN-Habitat's Regional Office for Africa, expressed the importance of this partnership, stating, "The collaboration with BLUETTI brings renewable energy to socially disadvantaged families in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly to women-led households. This initiative exemplifies a robust model of UN and private sector partnership." James Ray, a spokesperson for BLUETTI, shared pride in deepening their collaboration with UN-Habitat, emphasizing their mission to meet sustainable development goals responsibly.
Future Expansion Plans
After the successful launch of the LAAF initiative in Kenya, BLUETTI and UN-Habitat are planning to expand similar projects into other African nations. This affirms their commitment to advancing sustainability and ensuring equitable energy access throughout the continent.
