VIAVI T/Rx Selected for Groundbreaking Army Initiative
In a significant step forward for military testing capabilities, VIAVI Solutions Inc. has announced that its T/Rx software-defined transceiver system has been selected by the U.S. Army's Threat Systems Management Office (TSMO) to enhance Army test ranges with advanced electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) environments. This initiative is part of the Army's Test Range Private Industry Initiative, aimed at fostering innovation in drone and counter-drone technologies by opening premier facilities to commercial developers.
These developments come at a crucial time as the Army seeks to modernize its approach to testing and ensure that its capabilities reflect the strenuous environments seen in contemporary warfare. The T/Rx system has the unique capability to simulate complex electromagnetic conditions, enabling accurate testing and development assessments for various defense technologies. This capability is particularly essential not only for the Army's traditional defense systems but also for emerging technologies such as long-range fires and low-cost interceptors.
“The Army's test range expansion is aligning with modern acquisition reforms that will accelerate how quickly we can deliver essential capabilities to our warfighters,” said Doug Russell, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Aerospace & Defense at VIAVI Solutions. He emphasized how the T/Rx is engineered to meet the demands of contemporary military testing by providing sophisticated programmability and realistic electromagnetic environments that are critical for today’s warfighter.
The initiative permits companies that might not have preexisting government contracts to leverage these newly opened test ranges, allowing them to accelerate innovation in military technology at an unprecedented pace. As part of this initiative, Camp Grayling has been established as a key site for the program, recently conducting electromagnetic reliability tests. Here, the T/Rx system has showcased its ability to generate real-time EMS complexities, crucial for understanding and addressing modern battlefield challenges, including lessons learned from conflicts such as the one observed in Ukraine.
The T/Rx is a compact and rugged transceiver that unites signal generation and analysis within a field-deployable unit. Its versatility allows test range operators to create diverse and complex electromagnetic environments on demand, equipping them with the tools necessary to replicate the electronic warfare conditions they may encounter in real combat situations. The ability to produce representative waveforms and emulate various signals ensures that all operations are conducted under conditions mirroring real-world engagements.
As the defense landscape evolves, the need for accurate and rigorous testing will only grow in importance. With the support of VIAVI’s cutting-edge technologies, the Army will be able to maintain its leadership in military capabilities and enhance the effectiveness of future missions. Thus, as each technological component continues to advance, it encompasses a broader framework aimed at sustaining the integrity of military applications and ensuring operational readiness for troops in diverse environments.
With the commitment to developing and refining innovative solutions, VIAVI stands at the forefront of this transformation, ready to contribute significantly to the future of defense technology. By leveraging its expertise in optical technologies and testing solutions, the company aims to steady critical infrastructure that spans various sectors populated by military operations, aerospace, and civilian technologies alike.
