Mori Shita Jintan and the Taimai Festival in Tomo

Mori Shita Jintan Co., Ltd., headquartered in Chuo Ward, Osaka, is set to sponsor the annual "Tomo Taimai Festival," which will take place in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, starting April 26, 2025. This esteemed event is deeply rooted in tradition, employing the ancient fishing technique known as "Taimai Shibaridori" that has been practiced for approximately 400 years. This festival has become a cherished symbol of early summer in the region, and Mori Shita Jintan takes great pride in supporting an event that reflects its long-standing connection to the local community.

The Connection Between Tomo and Mori Shita Jintan

The founder of the company, Hiroshi Morishita (1869-1943), was born in Tomo Town into a family that had a long-standing role in the local community, notably as the priests of the Numanakami Shrine. After establishing Mori Shita Jintan, he devoted himself to community-driven initiatives, including support for the Taimai Festival, which solidified his place in the hearts of local residents. Today, a statue honoring him stands at Numanakami Shrine, where he continues to be affectionately remembered as "Jintan-san." The company carries on his legacy by prioritizing its connection to the local community and engaging in a variety of supportive activities.

Activities to Support Local Heritage

Mori Shita Jintan values its ties to Tomo, the birthplace of its founder. Over the years, the company has undertaken multiple initiatives aimed at fostering the development of the area. The company president himself has visited the region, immersing in the grandeur of the Taimai Shibaridori fishing method that has been preserved since the Edo period, experiencing the vibrancy of local life. Looking ahead, Mori Shita Jintan hopes to deepen its bonds with Tomo and other related areas while contributing not only to local revitalization but also to the preservation of traditional practices and cultural heritage.

What is the Tomo Taimai Festival?

The Tomo Taimai Festival is a remarkable event that reenacts the traditional fishing method known as Taimai Shibaridori. This technique was used historically in Tomo when the red sea bream (madai) returned to spawn in spring, allowing fishermen to capture them effectively. Attendees can board sightseeing boats that launch from Sensui Island and witness the spectacular execution of this traditional fishing method. In March 2015, Taimai Shibaridori was designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of Fukuyama City.
