AQUIS Earns the Prestigious Pepco Award for Innovative Energy Project at University of Maryland

In a significant achievement for sustainable construction practices, AQUIS has received the Pepco "Most Innovative Project" Service Provider Award for its exemplary work in optimizing energy efficiency at the University of Maryland. The award was specifically for a collaborative project that improved the performance of air handling units (AHUs) within the historic Marie Mount Hall, which has been serving as an academic building since 1940. This project highlights AQUIS's commitment to innovative solutions aimed at ensuring environmental sustainability and energy savings.

AQUIS, a renowned HVAC specialty contractor known for its focus on air handling unit refurbishment, optimization, and monitoring, deployed its cutting-edge SmartCoil® technology in this project. The SmartCoil system utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) for continuous monitoring and optimization of cooling coils, thereby maximizing efficiency in AHU operations. Three of the seven AHUs in Marie Mount Hall were equipped with this advanced system, which provided essential performance data for measurement and verification (MV). This process allowed the university to document significant energy savings and qualify for utility incentive rebates provided by Pepco’s Energy Savings for Business program.

Mike Bodón, President and CEO of AQUIS, expressed pride in their work, stating, "This recognition reflects the value of combining proven AHU optimization practices with continuous performance monitoring. We’re proud to support the University of Maryland’s sustainability goals while helping facilities uncover additional energy savings and utility incentive opportunities."

Awarded annually, the Pepco Service Provider Awards recognize contractors who demonstrate exceptional performance in delivering energy efficiency projects. Recipients are evaluated based on verified energy savings, project quality, customer satisfaction, and successful participation in utility incentive programs. Alex Schaub, the HVAC Superintendent at the University of Maryland, praised the AQUIS team for their outstanding performance, especially highlighting the SmartCoil installation crew. He remarked, "SmartCoil helped us identify rebate opportunities we weren't previously aware of, which became a catalyst for expanding our energy-efficiency efforts. Those rebates are allowing us to fund additional projects more quickly by generating returns from investments we've already made."

The project achieved impressive results, including a 12.1% reduction in energy consumption per AHU, translating to an annual savings of 47,800 kWh and a decrease of approximately 35.3 metric tons of carbon emissions. This project illustrates how targeted optimization of AHUs, alongside continuous monitoring, can not only enhance operational efficiency but also lower operational costs and uncover valuable utility incentives without incurring the disruption or expense of completely replacing equipment.

AQUIS, which has been in operation since 2005, has refurbished and optimized thousands of air handling units for a wide range of clients, including leading hospitals, universities, government agencies, and Fortune 500 organizations across North America. Their commitment to innovation and energy efficiency positions them as a leader in the HVAC industry, dedicated to extending equipment life, enhancing performance, and reducing energy consumption for their clients.
