Young Leaders Discuss Future of Direct Sales at Palsystem Forum in Tokyo

Future of Direct Sales: Insights from the Palsystem Forum

On March 4th, the Palsystem Producers and Consumers Council (生消協), which consists of producers from collaborating agricultural regions and the consumers who utilize Palsystem products, hosted its 37th Ordinary General Assembly in Tokyo's Chiyoda District at the Nikkei Hall. Following the assembly, a forum took place where staff members and producers engaged in a discussion about the vision for direct sales over the next decade. This included reports on the 'Next Generation Leader Training' and a panel discussion led by producers.

Assembly Highlights

The assembly saw attendance from 345 individuals, including producers from the regions tied to direct sales, cooperative members, and executives from the Palsystem group. Two main proposals were put forth: the approval of the activity report for the fiscal year ending in 2025, as well as the budget for fiscal year 2026. Both proposals received majority approval during the vote. The Q&A session saw discussions surrounding an SNS project initiated by the producers' operations committee, the role of board members, and the unique cultivation standards called 'Eco Challenge.'

During the assembly, Yasunori Ogawa, the representative secretary from Ibaraki Prefecture, expressed gratitude to all those involved: "Thanks to your cooperation, we were able to continue many activities in the fiscal year 2025. Moving forward, we aim to build a council that supports the Palsystem group closely."

Shibuya Atsuyuki, the chairman of the Palsystem Federation, emphasized the importance of dialogue by stating, "Now is the time for producers and consumers to express their thoughts to each other. Let’s strive to promote direct sales through food as a means to develop our community together."

Yasuda Masaki, the chairperson of the Palsystem Cooperative Association, highlighted the pressing issues related to climate change and food security. He noted past challenges like extreme heat and torrential rains, calling for societal change to address these interconnected issues: "The significance of the Producers and Consumers Council is becoming increasingly crucial."

Forum for Future Leaders

Following the assembly, the forum titled '2025 Next Generation Leader Training Report' and 'Reflecting on the Production Area Vision for the Future' commenced, focusing on connecting direct sales with future generations. The report from the Next Generation Leader Training was shared by five participants, including representatives from the Palsystem group, with Mr. Anzai Seiji from Malta Co. (Tokyo) highlighting their insights from the training, which included visits to production areas and set centers, along with group discussions and networking events.

Feedback from cooperative staff reflected a commitment to enhance awareness about production areas among their colleagues. A staff member noted, "I believe my role in the future involves creating more opportunities for those around me to learn about agriculture." Similarly, producers voiced the desire for collaborative efforts to tackle challenges across different roles in the upcoming year.

The subsequent panel discussion brought together five producers who shared their production area visions. Led by Tetsuro Sato from the Palsystem Federation, the producers discussed their experiences in formulating their visions, as well as the personal motivations driving their efforts.

During the discussion, participants acknowledged the difficulties in adhering to their originally planned visions due to unforeseen circumstances such as changing regulations, extreme weather, and pandemics. "While our initial directive was to formulate a vision based on the council's guidance, it has ultimately been an opportunity to reflect on the future of our production areas."

In closing, panelists expressed their aspirations to adapt their vision formulation processes to current conditions, emphasize collaboration with regional peers, and ensure that members' voices are incorporated into future initiatives.

Conclusion

As the Palsystem Producers and Consumers Council continues to evolve, the commitment of young leaders to explore and innovate around the framework of direct sales remains vital. Their active participation not only signifies the engagement of the next generation but also exemplifies a collective effort to address current and future challenges in food production and sustainability.
