DNO Produce Introduces Eco-Friendly Packaging, Phasing Out Single-Use Plastics for School Products

DNO Produce Pushes for Change with Innovative Packaging

In a significant move towards sustainability, DNO Produce, a family-owned fresh-cut produce manufacturer based in Columbus, has announced the elimination of traditional single-use plastics from its renowned FRESHEALTH product line. This innovative packaging initiative is designed to enhance the environmental responsibility of school nutrition programs across 17 states, reaching thousands of K-12 students daily.

Introducing New Sustainable Packaging

DNO Produce's commitment to transforming children's diets in schools has led to the integration of enhanced biodegradation films and compostable cups for its fresh food products. This shift is not merely a marketing strategy; it addresses growing concerns over waste management and environmental sustainability in food packaging. DNO’s recent announcement reveals that these changes will replace over 945,000 pounds of plastic from their operations each year.

Alex DiNovo, DNO’s President, emphasized the urgency of this transition, stating, “During the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for individually packaged produce surged, and we seized the opportunity to innovate our packaging while reducing landfill waste for future generations.” His words highlight the company’s dedication to not only providing healthy options but also teaching young consumers the importance of sustainability.

Addressing School Needs and Challenges

As many school districts grapple with staffing shortages, the demand for individually packaged and pre-portioned food continues to rise. DNO's prepared produce eliminates the need for schools to sort, wash, cut, and portion their food products, which had previously been distributed in plastic bags and cups. Starting Fall 2025, 94.3% of DNO's single-serve school offerings will transition to a more sustainable, film-based packaging that effectively breaks down in landfill conditions within 10 years—a stark contrast to traditional plastics, which can take up to 1,000 years to decompose.

The remaining 5.7% of DNO’s packaging is transitioning from plastic cups to compostable alternatives. These cups will yield maximum environmental benefits when composted properly, showcasing DNO’s commitment to fostering eco-friendly practices in schools.

Effect on Product Quality and Pricing

Interestingly, DNO Produce assures consumers that this switch will have no impact on the quality, shelf life, or pricing of its products. The focus remains on providing nutritious and appealing options for children, ensuring that the emphasis on sustainability does not compromise the quality that DNO is known for.

Educating Future Generations

DNO Produce’s efforts extend beyond product offerings; they aim to instill a sense of environmental stewardship within the students they serve. This new packaging initiative signifies a major leap towards demonstrating sustainable practices in the food industry to the younger generation. By making healthy eating both fun and responsible, DNO Produce seeks to be a model for other companies in the industry.
