Alt-Rock Band A Different Brand of Noise Unveils New Album 'Far More Than Conversation'

A Different Brand of Noise Returns with New Album

Nearly four decades after forming in the vibrant music scene of Montreal, the alt-rock trio, A Different Brand of Noise, is back with their highly anticipated second album, Far More Than Conversation., Released on major streaming platforms, this album is led by the thoughtful single, "Who Dares."

The origins of A Different Brand of Noise trace back to the early years of the band's members, guitarist Robert Ranaldi and bassist Ken Ashdown, who had already carved out successful careers in music before uniting with drummer Gonzo. Ranaldi made his mark with the bands Secret Act and Man and Things, while Ashdown enjoyed success with This "Blue Piano" and Ulysses Underwood. Both musicians gained substantial experience touring across Canada and the UK, and their paths crossed again when a serendipitous encounter reignited their friendship on a street in Montreal. This reconnection inspired them to form a power trio, quickly blending their musical talents and becoming a staple in Montreal's live music scene.

Their initial demo, recorded on an analog four-track in late 1987, eventually circulated as a bootleg titled Up, Tight, earning a dedicated fan base on campus and alternative radio channels. However, as life took priority, including university commitments and steady jobs, the band disbanded quietly after producing ten songs that went unreleased for many years.

As time went by, Ranaldi relocated to New York, Ashdown settled in Roberts Creek, BC, and Gonzo remained in Montreal. The unexpected onset of the pandemic prompted Ashdown to reach out to his former bandmates, leading to a collaborative effort to revive their old material. Over three years, they exchanged files, relearning songs from practice tapes and teaching themselves the nuances of audio production using Logic Pro. This diligent effort culminated in 19 completed songs, with the first ten being released in 2025 as their debut album, Blurry.

With Far More Than Conversation, the band embraces the essence of their earlier work, infusing their new songs with themes that resonate with contemporary audiences, addressing issues of sex, drugs, and the socio-political landscape. The energetic single "Who Dares" critiques income inequality and rampant consumerism, while another track, "Do the Poor," evolved from a chance overhearing of a conversation among affluent teenagers and features the adorable Sunshine Coast Children's Choir.

In "Designs," the band reflects upon a whimsical afternoon fueled by mushrooms, and "She's the One" pays tribute to Ranaldi's childhood sweetheart. Other notable tracks such as "Pleasure Signs," "Falling Down Again II," and "Time Will Tell" underscore the group's respect and reverence for their musical influences, showcasing an inspiring sense of optimism through their work.

Currently, the trio is balancing their musical endeavors with their professional careers in labor relations and behavioral neuroscience, making it challenging to undertake a touring schedule. However, the release of Far More Than Conversation marks a significant chapter in their musical journey, rekindling the passion that first brought them together decades ago. Fans can explore A Different Brand of Noise’s new sound via their social media platforms and join the excitement surrounding this remarkable band's resurgence in the music industry.
