Announcing the 2025 Douglass-O'Connell Global Interns
The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and the African American Irish Diaspora Network (AAIDN) are excited to announce the selection of the 2025 Douglass-O'Connell Global Interns. This program is designed for twelve exceptional American college students who will embark on a transformative journey in Dublin, Ireland, as part of an eight-week international internship.
A Commitment to Diversity
The Douglass-O'Connell program aims to introduce a new generation of leaders to the rich cultural tapestry of modern Ireland. The interns, hailing from diverse educational backgrounds and institutions across the United States, were chosen from a competitive field of over 500 applicants. This initiative pays homage to Frederick Douglass and Daniel O'Connell, two prominent figures who championed civil rights and social justice.
Among the selected students, we have Keana Pope from Arizona State University, who is pursuing Business Marketing, Ava Beery from Babson College studying Business Management, and Myana Garrison from Spelman College focusing on Public Health, to name a few. Each intern is not just academically gifted but also deeply committed to social equity and positive change in their communities.
The Internship Experience
During their time in Ireland, these interns will gain invaluable work experience with various Irish companies. Internship opportunities include writing and publishing for notable media outlets, data analysis for technology startup firms, and advocating for human rights issues impacting marginalized populations. Alongside a practical work environment, the students will attend lectures on Irish history and culture, which will greatly enhance their understanding of the context in which they are working.
Additionally, the participants will be involved in extracurricular activities that promote networking and skill-building, traveling across other vibrant cities such as Cork and Belfast. This approach not only enriches their internship experience but also fosters a deeper connection between the United States and Ireland.
Enhancing Opportunities for Future Leaders
Dennis Brownlee, the founder and chairman of AAIDN, expressed that as these talented students immerse themselves in an Irish workplace, they will not only build a professional foundation but also forge long-lasting international connections. These experiences are crucial in preparing them for future career opportunities and set them on paths toward personal growth.
James P. Pellow, Ed.D., President and CEO of CIEE, noted the importance of this program in increasing diversity in international experiences. He emphasized that this initiative is a step towards uniting the global Irish diaspora while enriching the students' understanding of a different culture.
To further support aspiring global leaders, all 500+ applicants who were not selected will receive a $1,500 Douglass-O’Connell Scholars Grant. This grant can be utilized towards CIEE’s extensive portfolio of over 200 summer and semester study abroad opportunities until Spring 2026.
A Legacy of Change
The Douglass-O'Connell Global Internship program stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of CIEE, AAIDN, and Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs. By honoring the legacies of Frederick Douglass and Daniel O'Connell, the program not only empowers a diverse group of young leaders but also strengthens ties between the United States and Ireland.
