FamilyMart's Initiative to Improve Logistics and Sustainability
FamilyMart, a leading convenience store chain in Japan, is set to implement major changes in its logistics operations starting September 16, 2025. These changes aim to enhance delivery efficiency, address environmental concerns, and optimize store operations specifically in the Hokuriku region, which includes Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui prefectures. The company plans to shift its delivery schedule from three daily runs to two for its temperature-controlled deliveries of items such as onigiri (rice balls) and bento (lunch boxes).
Enhancing Product Quality and Stability
In recent years, logistics in the retail sector has faced challenges like driver shortages, rising fuel costs, and increased labor and raw material prices in the food production facilities. FamilyMart is committed to reducing costs across the entire supply chain while ensuring the delivery of quality products and stable supplies. The newly structured logistics system also supports the profitability of franchise stores while focusing on environmental sustainability by working towards reducing CO2 emissions and food waste.
Overview of the Changes
- - Start Date: September 16, 2025
- - Product Range: Approximately 800 items including onigiri, sushi, bento, bread, side dishes, and desserts.
- - Location: Hokuriku region (about 550 stores in Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui).
- - Delivery Change: Transition from three daily deliveries to two, optimizing delivery routes and adjusting delivery times to better suit the stores’ needs.
- - Production Efficiency: The production facilities in the Hokuriku region, which previously produced around 70 items each at two different factories, will now share production duties to enhance manufacturing efficiency, leading to the creation of valuable products and a stable supply.
- - CO2 Reduction: The move to two deliveries per day is expected to reduce total driving distances by approximately 1.5 million kilometers annually, effectively cutting CO2 emissions by about 30%.
Supporting Franchisees
To assist franchise store operators with the transition, FamilyMart will provide a dedicated ordering support tool. Training on order balance will be offered to help stores adjust to the new delivery schedules and peak sales times. Supervisors will also provide detailed explanations to ensure a smooth transition for all involved.
Introduction of Frozen Bento
In a further effort to minimize food waste, FamilyMart will introduce frozen bento boxes, which will be available for long-term storage at approximately 550 stores in the Hokuriku area starting September 16, 2025. These frozen items are quickly frozen at the production facility right after cooking, ensuring they retain freshness. They can be reheated upon order, offering customers the taste of freshly made meals.
