Bringing Fiction to Life: How Soul Toll and Fit for Joy Create a Unique Project

In an extraordinary blend of fiction and reality, Anusia Gillespie's contemporary fantasy novel "Soul Toll" joins forces with the Hawaiian nonprofit organization, Fit for Joy Garden of Well-Being, to bring forth an innovative retreat called JoyLab. This partnership aims to bridge the imaginative realms crafted in literature with tangible, real-world outcomes focusing on well-being and personal growth.

For five years, Gillespie, a legal AI executive turned author, meticulously constructed the fictional universe of Resonance within her book, where characters embark on transformative journeys to discover their true selves and equip themselves with essential life skills. Unbeknownst to Gillespie, Valeria Koopman, the visionary behind Fit for Joy, was simultaneously developing a sanctuary in Kaua'i, focusing on holistic practices that promote healing and resilience, akin to the themes explored in Gillespie's work.

When the two women connected through Koopman's popular podcast series, "The Freedom to Feel," the synchronicity of their missions became immediately apparent. Echoing a shared commitment to nurturing self-discovery, they decided to collaborate, igniting a movement that marries fantasy storytelling with community empowerment. Gillespie now holds a position on the Board of Directors for Fit for Joy alongside an impressive roster of professionals dedicated to wellness and mindfulness.

To propel this initiative forward, Gillespie has taken it upon herself to spearhead fundraising efforts for JoyLab, pledging to match donations up to $20,000 until February 5, 2026. This funding will aid in establishing infrastructure and programming that fosters joy and well-being among participants. Gillespie's involvement signifies more than just financial support; it embodies her desire to see her fictional world resonate with real lives and contribute positively to individuals and communities.

The inaugural event of JoyLab, set to take place in March 2026, is a groundbreaking storytelling pilot. The program will welcome up to twelve participants to Kaua'i for an immersive experience blending the themes from "Soul Toll" with practical healing practices derived from JoyLab’s mission. Participants will engage in introspective narratives, explore their identity transformations, and express their creativity while connecting with fellow attendees and the local community.

Through activities that emphasize personal growth and community engagement, JoyLab provides a unique experience where storytelling fosters interpersonal bonds and cultivates creative expression. The inclusion of a visiting screenwriter will further enhance this initiative, as it seeks to explore the intersection of narratives in various mediums.

Gillespie shares her excitement: “As I learned more about JoyLab, it felt like my fictional world was jumping off the page and into real life. This collaboration will give it a home in the real world and turn story into practice.
