KIBO SPACE LIVE: Bridging Earth and Space at Expo 2025
The anticipation is building as we approach July 10, 2025, the day when the first-ever space live event, "KIBO SPACE LIVE," will take place at the Osaka Kansai Expo. Organized by Vascule Co., Ltd. with President Jeong-Ui Park at the helm, this landmark event aims to connect the International Space Station (ISS) to the Expo's Shine Hat venue in real-time, giving attendees a unique experience like no other.
Event Overview
The KIBO SPACE LIVE event will be structured in three distinct parts, each featuring different themes and live performances, along with interactions and discussion sessions. Throughout the event, live broadcasts of Earth will be shown from the ISS, creating an immersive experience for all attendees. Participation is free, but an entrance ticket to the Expo is required. Reservations for the event opened on June 10, 2025. More details can be found on the official event website.
Part 1: A Historic Connection Between Space and Expo
Time: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Special Guests: MC, Naoko Yamazaki (astronaut), representatives from Japan's Ministry of the Environment, and more.
This first part marks a historic moment as the Expo venue connects to the ISS for the very first time. Guests will have the opportunity to experience live video feeds of Earth transmitted from the ISS's external cameras. Naoko Yamazaki will host discussions and share insights while attendees view these breathtaking images on a giant screen. For a groundbreaking touch, the Ministry of the Environment will showcase real-time data from the greenhouse gas observation satellite, GOSAT, overlaid on the live footage, providing a deeper understanding of our planet's current state. This section will also introduce the SpaceTide 2025 conference, highlighting the latest developments in the space industry.
Part 2: Collaboration with the 'Adventure of Life' Pavilion
Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Special Guests: MC, Shoji Kawamori (animation director), and others.
In a special collaboration with the popular "Adventure of Life" pavilion, produced by renowned animation director Shoji Kawamori, this session will feature additional live action footage from the ISS combined with time-lapse images of Earth captured by the Himawari weather satellite, positioned 36,000 km above. Participants will engage in discussions with Kawamori, observing changing weather patterns and the dynamic beauty of our planet. A unique participatory content called the "Wishes Expo" will also give audience members the chance to share their hopes and dreams visually displayed on the live feeds.
Part 3: Live Connection with Astronaut Takeya Onishi
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Special Guests: MC, Takeya Onishi (JAXA astronaut), Akihiko Hoshide (JAXA astronaut), Thomas Pesquet (ESA astronaut), and more.
The main highlight of the KIBO SPACE LIVE event will be a live interaction with astronaut Takeya Onishi, currently residing on the ISS. For the first time in Expo history, attendees will have the chance to communicate in real-time with an astronaut in space. Expect thrilling moments, including a potential live view of Japan as the ISS passes overhead at this hour. Notably, astronauts Akihiko Hoshide and Thomas Pesquet will join the event to share their perspectives on Earth from the cosmos. This section will also unveil a new collaboration with the International Horticultural Expo scheduled to take place in Yokohama in 2027. The event will conclude with a performance of the charity song "Hoshi no Oto" featuring renowned conductor Ko Matsushita and Grammy Award-winning cellist El Matsumoto, rounding off the KIBO SPACE LIVE in a truly spectacular manner.
