On June 24, during a challenging mission launched from Esrange Space Center in Sweden, the AirX case successfully survived a drop from 30,607 meters (over 100,000 feet) above the Earth, achieving the title of "The Highest Drop of a Mobile Phone in a Phone Case (Natural Landforms)" by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™.

Pushing the Limits of Protection

The AirX case is designed to offer top-tier protection without compromising on sustainability. Utilizing an innovative air-cushion system inspired by airbags, the case effectively absorbs impacts and disperses energy, preventing internal damage to the device. Before the ambitious drop test, the AirX was rigorously tested in the lab under various conditions, including rotational drops and resistance to internal damage. The rigorous evaluations validated its structural integrity and protection levels.

A Collaborative Effort in Aerospace

To bring this ambitious project to fruition, RHINOSHIELD collaborated with Sent Into Space, a British aerospace company. After meticulous preparation over the course of a year, a custom payload was developed featuring a remote drop mechanism and a GPS tracking system.

The mission saw an iPhone 17 Pro equipped with the commercially available AirX case ascend via a stratospheric balloon to an altitude three times greater than a typical commercial airliner. Captivating images of the AirX case against the backdrop of Earth were captured before the phone was released for freefall.

Facing Extreme Conditions

Withstood harsh conditions, the AirX case was exposed to stratospheric temperatures ranging between -40°C and -60°C and only 1% of the air pressure found at sea level during its descent. The phone began its drop after 25 minutes of ascent. Dr. Chris Rose, co-founder of Sent Into Space, expressed uncertainty about the case’s performance under such extreme conditions prior to the test.

Once the phone landed back on Earth, the recovery team successfully tracked the device using GPS in the Swedish wilderness. Upon retrieval, an official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ judge confirmed that all essential functions of the phone were operational, demonstrating the efficacy of the AirX’s multilayer protection system. The phone could still take photos, make calls, and power on/off, all while remaining visibly intact.
