Okayama University Signs International Exchange Agreement with UNU to Promote Sustainable Development

Okayama University and the UN University Collaborate for Sustainability

On October 20, 2025, Okayama University’s Tsushima Campus hosted a significant event that marked the signing of an international exchange agreement (MoU) between the university and the United Nations University (UNU). The ceremony was graced by the presence of prominent figures including Ayako Suzuki, the Senior Vice-Rector of UNU, and Okayama University’s President, Tomoyuki Nasuh. Before a gathering that included key representatives from both institutions, the agreement was signed, solidifying their commitment to enhance cooperation in various fields such as education, research, and student exchanges.

This collaborative effort aims to contribute toward realizing a sustainable society. President Nasuh expressed his vision for increased research partnerships, particularly with the UNU's 13 research centers spread across 12 countries, along with the development of internship programs for graduate students. Vice-Rector Suzuki also voiced appreciation for Okayama University's ongoing projects and expressed optimism for further deepening cooperation.

The foundations for this partnership were laid back in December 2017 during the first RCE World Conference, co-hosted by UNU-IAS and Okayama RCE. This was a crucial moment that initiated closer ties between the two institutions. Over the years, their collaborative activities have only intensified, including participation in the “SDG University Partnership Platform” in April 2022 and the chairing role within the “Sustainable Campus Subcommittee” of that platform in April 2023.

In 2024, UNU President Chiriac Marwala is scheduled to visit Okayama University to present a lecture focusing on the role of UNU in promoting SDGs. Additionally, faculty from Okayama University are actively involved in the newly established ‘AI and the Future of Higher Education’ action group under the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI). President Nasuh is also set to speak at the HESI Global Forum in July 2025, showcasing Okayama University's global collaborations and initiatives aimed at engaging youth.

An important milestone in this developing relationship is the participation of Okayama University in the 14th Global RCE Conference held from October 21-23, which is co-hosted alongside UNU-IAS and Okayama City. Okayama University will play an integral role in the breakout sessions and field visits, ensuring that both institutions continue to thrive in their collaborative efforts.

As the collaboration progresses, there is a palpable sense of anticipation for what’s ahead. President Nasuh asserted, “We are particularly committed to enhancing our research collaborations with UNU's centers globally and implementing effective programs for our students.”

The RCE (Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development) focuses on fostering education for sustainable development, and the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative highlights the crucial role of higher education in achieving sustainable development goals. Every year, HESI holds a global forum during the UN High-Level Political Forum as part of its mission.

This is an exciting time for Okayama University as it continues to position itself as a central research university dedicated to regional and global sustainability. Stakeholders are encouraged to look forward to innovative projects and partnerships that will not only benefit the university but also the wider community and the planet.
