Smart City Expo 2026 Highlights Urban Solutions Achieving Real Impact in Cities

Smart City Expo 2026 Concludes with Significant Insights

The Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC), held at the Gran Via venue in Barcelona, concluded successfully with over 29,000 attendees from about 140 countries. This year's theme, "Urban Solutions, Real Impact," focused on showcasing how cities are leveraging technology to tackle pressing urban challenges, particularly in affordable housing, climate change, and mobility enhancements.

The congress featured 668 international experts and attracted representatives from more than 1,000 cities. Notable speakers included prominent figures such as Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris; Andre Dickens, Mayor of Atlanta; along with other influential leaders in urban development and technology.

The event unfolded over several days, structured around seven key discussion tracks, each aiming to explore innovative strategies in urban management. Participants had opportunities to share best practices and learn from successful models implemented in various cities. The discussions reflected a collaborative approach, highlighting how urban solutions not only address immediate concerns but also lay the groundwork for sustainable development.

"Three days ago, we set out to show that smart city initiatives are already making an impact. We wanted to highlight the capabilities of cities that are eager to scale successful initiatives. With over 27,000 attendees and 1,276 exhibitors, the message was loud and clear: cities are ready to implement effective solutions, and we stand ready to facilitate this process," said Ugo Valenti, Director of the Smart City Expo World Congress.

A Forum for Innovation and Collaboration

In conjunction with SCEWC, the Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress, along with other events such as Tomorrow.Blue and Barcelona Cybersecurity Congress, took place. Together, these gatherings featured 1,276 exhibitors, including industry leaders like Dell Technologies, Google, and Microsoft, showcasing the latest innovations in urban solutions.

An essential component of the conference was the Cities Programme, organized together with the Barcelona City Council. This initiative facilitated strategic knowledge exchange among city leaders and featured events such as the Housing Mayors Meeting. These sessions focused on pressing urban issues, allowing leaders to discuss housing strategies and mobility solutions collaboratively.

Additionally, the event recognized outstanding contributions to urban development with the World Smart City Awards. Tokyo was awarded the title of "Smart City of 2026" for its innovative C³ Powering Tokyo project. This initiative focuses on keeping residents at the core of Tokyo's digital transformation strategy, emphasizing the integration of artificial intelligence for a better urban experience.

Looking Ahead to 2027

The energy and enthusiasm from this year's expo have set the stage for future events. Smart City Expo World Congress will hold its sixteenth edition next year, scheduled for November 2-4, 2027. Anticipation is already building for an even more profound exploration of urban solutions transforming cities globally.

The 2026 edition demonstrated how cities are not merely adapting to challenges but actively reshaping their futures through technology and collaboration. As urban populations grow, the gathering of minds at Smart City Expo serves as a beacon for innovative solutions that prioritize residents' needs, fostering sustainable urban living.
