CATACARB® Honored with Carbon Remover Award at Carbon Capture Canada 2025

CATACARB® Achieves Recognition for CO2 Removal Innovation

In a remarkable achievement, CATACARB has been awarded the prestigious Carbon Remover Award at the Carbon Capture Canada event held in Edmonton. This recognition highlights the company’s commitment to advancing innovative and efficient carbon dioxide removal technologies. The Carbon Remover Award specifically honors organizations that significantly contribute to the development and application of carbon removal methods.

CATACARB gained this accolade particularly due to its integral involvement in the Stockholm Exergi Project, which stands as Europe’s first large-scale facility designed for negative emissions. The project utilized CATACARB’s proprietary HPC (Enhanced Hot Potassium Carbonate) technology. The company provided not only the licensing of this technology but also contributed the process design package, alongside offering ongoing technical support to Stockholm Exergi and Saipem, their selected partner for detailed engineering, procurement, and construction.

Tobias Pelicano, Project Manager at Stockholm Exergi, praised CATACARB’s responsiveness throughout various design phases, emphasizing how essential their collaboration was to the development of their new Bio-Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) facility. This project exemplifies the effective partnership between innovative engineering and execution in driving substantial carbon capture at an industrial scale.

The award underscores CATACARB’s leading position in commercial-scale CO2 removal solutions and reaffirms the company’s dedication to deploying proven technologies aimed at reducing atmospheric carbon levels. The Stockholm Exergi project exemplifies how applied technologies, licensing partnerships, and collaborative project implementation can propel effective, long-term carbon capture in industrial applications. The facility is projected to prevent 800,000 tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere each year.

Dr. Gary Buckholz, CEO of CATACARB, accepted the award on behalf of all those who contributed to the development of CATACARB technology, particularly A. G. Eickmeyer, whose advancements have been refined over more than six decades. He also acknowledged Marc Donnelly, the Vice President and General Manager, who leads the engineering team dedicated to such critical work.
