FamilyMart and Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan Launch Bottle Cap Recycling Initiative in Adachi

FamilyMart and Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan Join Forces for Sustainability

In an exciting new initiative aimed at promoting sustainability, FamilyMart and Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan have announced a collaboration to recycle pet bottle caps. This program will kick off at 20 selected FamilyMart stores in Adachi City, Tokyo, where customers can drop off their used bottle caps in specially designated collection boxes starting in late February 2026. The recycled caps will be transformed into unique original fans (uchiwa) made from recycled materials, making them not just eco-friendly but practical for the hot summer months.

Project Overview

The joint effort between FamilyMart and Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan is part of their ongoing commitment to sustainability and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since February 2023, the two companies have been collaborating on multiple projects, including educational programs, events to promote understanding of LGBTQ issues, and initiatives to enhance the traceability of bottle recycling. The bottle cap recycling program represents an accessible recycling action for consumers, encouraging community participation easily through their everyday convenience stores.

Customers will find collection boxes in the participating stores, enabling them to contribute to the recycling effort conveniently while shopping. Each cap handed over will be repurposed, with the recycled material forming the handle of the fans, which will be distributed at the same stores.

Distribution Schedule

The timeline for the bottle cap collection is set from February to the end of March 2026. As summer approaches, preparations for fan distribution will begin, with the goal of keeping the community comfortable during the hot weather. Starting in July, the original fans made from recycled caps will be distributed at the 20 participating stores in Adachi. Additionally, to kick off the distribution, five stores will provide fans ahead of the Adachi Fireworks Festival on May 30.
