Kingsford® Launches 'Pass The Tongs'

Kingsford®, the iconic brand known for its association with American barbecue, has recently introduced a groundbreaking initiative named 'Pass The Tongs.' This program aims to shine a light on Black grilling traditions while empowering the next generation of barbecue enthusiasts through a blend of culture, education, and community connection.

The launch event took place in Atlanta, marking a new era in Kingsford's dedication to preserving barbecue traditions while also fostering community ties and motivating future leaders within the grilling space. Since 2021, Kingsford has invested over $355,000 into the barbecue community through its 'Preserve the Pit' initiative. This program has been pivotal in supporting 11 mentors alongside 15 entrepreneurs in the barbecue arena, providing essential grants and resources to a total of 35 barbecue businesses nationwide.

Bringing the spirit of this initiative to life, Kingsford is collaborating with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and various local organizations to spotlight the rich histories, stories, and flavors that have influenced generations. “At Kingsford, grilling is more than just a craft. It's a tradition that connects generations and communities,” stated Mitch O'Furey, Marketing Director at Kingsford. He emphasized that 'Pass The Tongs' is not merely a celebration of the past, but also a commitment to empowering emerging barbeque innovators and storytellers poised to continue this rich legacy.

A noteworthy aspect of 'Pass The Tongs' is its partnership with Morehouse College. This collaboration will lead to meaningful discussions and enhance fall programming on campus, creating engaged experiences that encourage students and the wider community to connect over the enduring legacy of barbecuing.

Katina Henderson-Hawkins, the Director of Event Sponsorships, Partnerships, and Parent Engagement at Morehouse College, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to collaborate with Kingsford, whose commitment to uplifting our students, enhancing their on-campus experience, and expanding career pathways aligns perfectly with Morehouse College's mission.” She added that this initiative provides a unique opportunity to nurture future leaders.

The launch of 'Pass The Tongs' consists of a series of culinary experiences throughout Atlanta, each filled with flavor and celebration. The kickoff included a lively grill-off and smokehouse sampling at the Atlanta Greek Picnic, energizing the local community.

Upcoming events include:
  • - Morehouse Hump Wednesday (August 27): Featuring curated grill tastings powered by celebrity chef Way, music, and a fireside chat moderated by Isaiah Evans, HBCU Buzz's Top HBCU Host of 2025. They will reflect on the cultural significance of barbecue heritage.
  • - Taste of Soul Atlanta (August 30): An elevated culinary tasting trail located at the Home Depot Backyard, showcasing regional barbecue styles while celebrating the culinary heritage's richness.
  • - Morehouse Homecoming (October 18): An immersive cookout with hands-on grilling stations, trivia, and guest appearances, including celebrity pitmaster Pat Neely to highlight the celebration of community and tradition.

These events aim to provide students, Atlanta residents, and visitors with opportunities to engage deeply in authentic barbecue culture through 'Pass The Tongs,' fostering connections, celebration, and local pride.
