Celebrating Mother's Wellness Day: A Focus on Health and Self-Care

Introduction

Mother’s Day is traditionally celebrated to honor mothers, but the ‘Mother’s Wellness Day’ initiative, spearheaded by the Shibuya Future Design organization, introduces a fresh perspective: focusing on mothers’ health. Established in 2022, this initiative promotes a culture where mothers prioritize their wellness and self-care on this special day, observed every second Sunday of May.

The Project’s Genesis

The concept for Mother's Wellness Day emerged from the desire to transform how Mother's Day is celebrated. Last year, the project emphasized the importance of raising awareness about various aspects of health — including blood circulation, dental care, skin health, and individuality — by designating a themed day for each. This year, they added 'Mother’s Good Sweat Day' to celebrate mothers who stay active for the sake of themselves and their families. As we lead up to this year's event, the initiative aims to reach mothers across Japan, encouraging them to engage with their health and wellness actively.

Surveys Highlight the Health Consciousness Gap

In tandem with these celebrations, two surveys were conducted to assess both mothers’ awareness of their own health and the perceptions held by their families and partners. An alarming 80% of mothers reported that they often put their needs last, while around 50% of family members believed that mothers do not get enough rest. This indicates a significant disconnect: a 30% gap in perception between mothers and their families regarding the attention allocated to their health.

The findings underscore a critical insight: what mothers need isn't just an increase in health awareness but a nurturing environment that facilitates self-care and healthful activities. The revelations from these surveys will guide the future efforts of the Mother's Wellness Day initiative.

Nationwide Celebration and Activities

From May 7th to 10th, various activities took place at MIYASHITA PARK in Shibuya. Notably, a panel display showcased the significance of Mother's Wellness Day. Attendees were also provided with message cards, allowing them to write encouraging notes to their loved ones. This year, the new 'Mother’s Good Sweat Day' was celebrated with an outpouring of appreciation for mothers who maintain active lifestyles, proving that the initiative is growing and resonating with the community.

On Mother’s Day, participants in a survey were awarded 'Mother's Wellness Day Gift Bags,' which included products from partner brands and heartfelt messages, highlighting a collective appreciation for mothers. Moreover, visual displays throughout the park educated passersby about the project's essence, creating ripples of awareness among the general public.

Involvement of Local Businesses

Shibuya's local businesses also played a part by promoting Mother's Wellness Day at two Kokokara Fine locations near Shibuya Station, distributing message cards to customers and raising awareness about health-related products. Such collaboration aims to foster a community that values mothers’ health.

Additionally, during the JINNAN MARKET event, customers were given message cards, providing further exposure to the initiative and encouraging conversations about mother’s health.

Survey Results: Key Insights

The health consciousness survey conducted from May 7th-10th, involved 435 respondents, shedding light on family dynamics concerning mothers' well-being. A significant portion, approximately 70.6%, noted a shift in their mindset towards mothers' health post-event. Yet, the survey revealed that many families express support in intangible ways — such as offering gratitude — but concrete actions that promote improvement, such as sharing household duties or providing practical tools for wellness, were less common.

The survey targeting mothers themselves found that an overwhelming 76.5% felt that their needs are often sidelined. The primary areas they wished to address included emotional stability, physical strength, quality sleep, and time management. Importantly, 96.7% expressed a willingness to initiate concrete steps toward improving their health, indicating that while the desire is there, systemic changes in family support are essential.

Conclusion

The Mother’s Wellness Day initiative exemplifies an innovative approach that underscores the importance of maternal health awareness, blending celebration with actionable insights. At its core, the project advocates for a community that spurs mothers towards self-care, thereby fostering a culture where mothers can thrive. Moving forward, the goal is to further extend this initiative beyond Shibuya, enhancing connections and creating supportive environments nationwide. The success of Mother’s Wellness Day lies in not merely celebrating mothers, but in enabling them to prioritize wellness in their busy lives, making self-care a shared responsibility within families.
