Film Overview
The highly anticipated film
'Boku no Ohisama', directed by the exceptionally talented Hiroshi Okuyama, will begin exclusive streaming on FOD from midnight on September 6th. This heartwarming movie, which previously made its way to the prestigious
'Un Certain Regard' section of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, tells a touching story centered around the world of figure skating.
Storyline
The story revolves around Takuya (played by Keita Koshiyama), a sixth-grade boy living in a quaint rural town. Struggling with a slight speech impediment, Takuya finds himself out of place amongst his classmates, who are busy practicing baseball in the summer and ice hockey in the winter. One fateful day, while nursing an injury from ice hockey, he encounters Sakura (played by Kira Nakanishi), a girl practicing her figure skating skills. Captivated by Sakura's graceful movements as she glides across the ice to
'Clair de Lune', Takuya feels an inexplicable pull toward her.
Simultaneously, we learn about Coach Arakawa (played by Sosuke Ikematsu), who helps Sakura with her training. Although she admires him, she struggles to look him in the eye during practice. As rumors spread about Arakawa's past as a competitive male figure skater, we learn that he moved to this town, leaving behind his aspirations in Tokyo for love.
While observing Sakura’s dedication, Coach Arakawa notices Takuya attempting to mimic her steps while still in his ice hockey skates, often falling over. Realizing Takuya's budding affection for Sakura, he decides to lend him a pair of figure skates and helps him practice. As their friendship develops, Coach Arakawa suggests that Takuya and Sakura should start training as a dance pair on the ice.
Through a beautiful combination of struggle, romance, and the rich narrative of friendship,
'Boku no Ohisama' illustrates how the three characters intertwine their lives on a journey toward personal growth and emotional healing.
Visual Aesthetics
As a work directed by Okuyama, known for his visually stunning storytelling, the film encapsulates the delicate and breathtaking beauty of winter. Shot in various picturesque locations across Hokkaido during the winter and spring seasons, it captures the serenity of falling snow and the poignancy of a young, tender love story—that unfolds as winter melts into spring.
Critical Acclaim
The film has already garnered recognition, winning the Best New Director award at the 66th San Sebastián International Film Festival, making Okuyama the youngest recipient in this category. With its unique narrative approach and heartfelt performances from the cast, this film aims to present an unprecedented experience in modern Japanese cinema.
