4th Beijing International Canal Arts Festival Kicks Off in Tongzhou

On September 24, 2026, the 4th Beijing International Canal Arts Festival commenced with grandeur along the historic Grand Canal in Tongzhou. As a signature event promoting cultural and artistic exchange between China and the world, this festival has become a vital platform since its inception in 2018.

The festival is not only about showcasing artistic talent from various nations but also aims to highlight the historical significance of the Grand Canal, which is acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The event aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on heritage conservation and urban revitalization through cultural initiatives.

This year, the festival gathered over 150 international guests and artists from countries such as Albania, Ivory Coast, Norway, Sweden, and Turkey. The opening ceremony was marked by an impressive cross-border program featuring performances from various ensembles. Notable acts included China’s Rongxiang Sanxian Chamber Orchestra, Romania’s FETNO, Norway's Maria Arredondo, and New Zealand's singer-songwriter Luke Thompson. The 4th Beijing International Canal Arts Festival runs until September 27, showcasing artworks from 14 different artistic groups representing 13 countries, presenting a total of 22 diverse performances that celebrate the unity in cultural differences.

Additionally, the festival also features an engaging bazaar themed “Canal × Mid-Autumn,” consisting of 60 original stalls categorized into three zones: “Bites,” “Finds,” and “Vibes.” This area combines global cuisine, international crafts, and interactive experiences, making it an immersive leisure experience for visitors.

A significant highlight of the festival was the premiere of a video titled “The Canal of Beijing,” introduced alongside 10 cultural walking tours themed around the Grand Canal. These tours invite tourists from around the globe to discover and appreciate the millennia-old civilization of Beijing's waterways at their own pace, promising an enlightening exploration of the rich cultural narrative woven through the canals.
