Missouri Students Shine at Mott Million Dollar Challenge National Finals in Flint

Students from Missouri Reach the Mott Million Dollar Challenge Finals

In an inspiring showcase of creativity and entrepreneurship, two students from Missouri have advanced as semifinalists in the prestigious Mott Million Dollar Challenge, set to take place on June 15-16 in Flint, Michigan. This national competition recognizes innovative ideas from K-12 students across the United States, and the Missouri finalists are proof that the next generation is ready to make an impact.

The Mott Million Dollar Challenge, funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, invites students to pitch their business concepts that address social issues and promote creative entrepreneurship. This year, more than 5,300 participants from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. submitted around 3,700 ideas. Out of these prolific submissions, only 1,500 were selected to advance to the semifinal round, with just 60 reaching the final stage.

The two standout semifinalists from Missouri are:
1. Eric Diao (6th Grade, 4H) - Hilingual Board Game: This innovative board game aims to bridge cultural divides by teaching players different languages and traditions through engaging trivia and interactive gameplay. Eric’s concept emphasizes the importance of global connectivity and understanding in today's increasingly multicultural society.

2. Claudia Schaefer (7th Grade, Hixson Middle School) - House Helper: Claudia has designed an AI-powered camera system that assists individuals in locating misplaced items within their homes. By reviewing footage, her system can identify the last-known location of lost objects, providing a practical solution for everyday frustrations.

Each student will receive a $5,000 award as semifinalists and have the opportunity to pitch their projects live to a panel of judges during the final competition. This is not just an achievement; it’s a chance for these bright minds to gain recognition and possibly turn their ideas into reality.

The Mott Million Dollar Challenge aims to highlight the importance of entrepreneurship education, equipping young individuals with the necessary skills to navigate their future successfully and inspire a new generation of innovators. By encouraging students like Eric and Claudia to explore their entrepreneurial ambitions, the initiative stands as a vital cornerstone in the development of creative problem-solving in young minds.

The final event is supported by several key organizations including the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), VentureLab, and the Young Entrepreneur Institute (YEI), along with partnerships aimed at bolstering entrepreneurship in education.

The Mott Million Dollar Challenge not only recognizes these young entrepreneurs but also fosters a community where ideas can flourish. As the June event approaches, the excitement for these students grows, putting them on the brink of potentially transformative experiences.
