Celebrate Global Goals Day with Sustainable Preserved Flowers from Hibiya Kadan

Hibiya Kadan Celebrates Global Goals Day

On September 25, the Hibiya Kadan Group, in collaboration with Daichi Nōen, is excited to unveil a new line of sustainable preserved flowers made from domestic materials, directly in line with their commitment to ecological responsibility. This initiative is part of their 'Hanayagi Project', aiming to foster a sustainable florist model, which will be showcased at the pop-up store "Sustainable Challenge Shop" from September 19 to 25, 2025, inside Hibiya-Kadan Style at Shibuya Hikarie.

Sustainable Flowers with Local Roots

For this special event, Hibiya Kadan has partnered with Daichi Nōen, based in Hyogo Prefecture, which specializes in the sustainable cultivation of flowers that thrive in Japan's beautiful satoyama (mountain village) environment. The designs, created by designer Chika Ishii, feature four types of exquisitely arranged preserved flowers, all using only locally sourced materials. Each piece is artfully placed in 100% renewable glass containers to underscore the commitment to sustainability.

Hibiya Kadan is particularly excited to launch its new sustainable product line coinciding with Global Goals Day, a day acknowledged by the United Nations, emphasizing the importance of a sustainable future. This marks the fourth implementation of the Sustainable Challenge Shop initiative, following the previous successful event for Environment Day in June.

The Beauty of Preserved Flowers

Preserved flowers are unique in that they undergo a specialized process that allows them to maintain their beauty over extended periods. However, this process is not without challenges, as it often involves chemicals that can pose environmental risks and concerns over safety. Hibiya Kadan, through collaboration with Daichi Nōen, tackles these challenges head-on. Together, they are pioneering sustainable practices in the flower industry, making their preserved flowers a rare and eco-conscious offering.

A Glimpse into the Materials Used

Ferns: Sourced from local satoyama environments, these ferns exemplify Japan's rich biodiversity.
Roses: The roses are cultivated by Kunieda Rose Garden in Shiga Prefecture, adding vibrant color to the collection and showcasing local craftsmanship.

These curated materials not only highlight Japan's abundant natural beauty but also promote local artisanship. By offering products made exclusively from domestic resources, the initiative seeks to shed light on the abilities of local producers while encouraging a buy-local mindset among consumers.

Exclusive Offerings and More

In addition to the sustainable preserved flowers, the pop-up store will also feature fresh seasonal flowers cultivated with environmental considerations. Unique arrangements utilizing bio-based plastic vases created from corn resources and natural materials (such as Hinoki cypress) will also be available. Moreover, the shop will introduce new colors for the eco-friendly "Chou Chou Fleur" bouquets, which are fully wrapped in paper and can be displayed beautifully without additional vases.

Aiming for a Sustainable Future

Hibiya Kadan has expressed their commitment to a sustainable future through the comprehensive environmental policy launched in July. They recently achieved Eco Stage certification, reinforcing their role as pioneers within the floral industry. Through events like the Sustainable Challenge Shop, they hope to inspire both customers and themselves to think critically about their environmental impact and make strides towards a sustainable society.

Materials and Techniques Behind Sustainability

The sustainable preserved flowers are crafted from the finest domestic materials, some of which include:

Ajisai (Hydrangea): This beautiful flower is cultivated in Japan and is an essential part of the arrangements.
Anabelle (Oregano Purple) and Scabiosa: Native species that thrive in Japanese gardens, adding versatility to the floral designs.

Each flower type reflects a commitment to sustainability while showcasing Japanese horticultural expertise.

Designer Insights

Chika Ishii, the designer of these pieces, shared that the preserved flowers are a celebration of nature, designed to evoke warmth and a connection to the abundant natural surroundings. The organic glass containers were selected to evoke the shapes of trees and mountains, designed carefully to enhance each bloom yet remain simple enough for any décor. Their purpose extends beyond mere decoration; they are perfect gifts that convey a thoughtful message of care for the environment.
