Transforming a Cinema into an Art Gallery
The HUMAX Cinemas, managed by HUMAX Entertainment Co., has been transformed into an art gallery through its ongoing original foreign movie poster exhibition. This stunning display, which features an extensive collection of movie posters from around the world, has attracted nearly 90,000 visitors since its inception. Due to its overwhelming popularity, the exhibition in Yokosuka and Ikebukuro has been extended until March 31, providing even more film enthusiasts the chance to enjoy the captivating artwork on display.
An Artistic Encounter
The concept of showcasing foreign original movie posters originated from a serendipitous encounter by a staff member at HUMAX Entertainment. Finding out from family that a university hospital was exhibiting foreign movie posters piqued their curiosity. Upon visiting, they were astonished by the unique designs that set these prints apart from their Japanese counterparts. Observing visitors reminiscing over the posters sparked the realization: “Foreign movie posters are art!” Inspired by this revelation, the staff believed that sharing this artistic experience in a cinema would equally delight movie lovers.

Interview with Ms. Hayashi, HUMAX Cinemas Yokosuka
Ms. Hayashi shared her thoughts on the exhibition:
- - What inspired you to initiate this project?
For some time now, I have admired the mural of classic films at Narita HUMAX Cinemas and the escalator designs at Ikebukuro Grand Cinema Sunshine. I believe decorations enhance the excitement of visiting a cinema. It has been a genuinely rewarding experience to create a space surrounded by over 300 movie posters.
- - What was the customer reaction during the exhibition?
We noticed a significant amount of curiosity from attendees during setup, and it was thrilling to see many purchasing posters. The excitement and joyous energy our visitors exuded confirmed the success of our exhibition.
- - What are your hopes for future exhibitions?
In today’s era, where people can enjoy films from the comfort of their homes, we aim to create engaging experiences through high-quality sound systems, projection equipment, decorations, and food offerings—essentially trying to craft the thrill of cinema as a whole.
