12th Annual MUAHS Awards: A Night of Recognition
On February 17, 2025, the 12th Annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (MUAHS) Awards took place at the luxurious Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Hollywood, California. The event, presented by L'Oréal Groupe and Giovanni Eco Chic Beauty, recognized the outstanding contributions of makeup artists and hairstylists in the film, television, and theater industries.
Celebrating Artistic Excellence
This year's ceremony stood out as it showcased the artistry and innovation of exemplary professionals across multiple categories. The awards program featured 23 categories, including feature films, television shows, music videos, and even theater productions, reflecting a growing appreciation for the craft. Notably, for the first time, the theater category included both Broadway and international theater productions, acknowledging the global influence of stage artistry.
The night's featured winners in the motion picture categories included "Wicked," "The Substance," and "The Last Showgirl." In the television realm, standout series such as "Emily in Paris," "Palm Royale," "The Penguin," and classic favorites like "Bridgerton" and "Dancing with the Stars" received accolades for their remarkable make-up and hair design.
Special Awards and Honors
A significant highlight of the evening was the Distinguished Artisan Award presented to the celebrated actress Allison Janney. The award was bestowed upon her by Dulé Hill, who has collaborated with Janney on the award-winning show, "The West Wing." Known for her dynamic performances, Janney has accumulated numerous accolades throughout her career, including an Academy Award, seven Primetime Emmy Awards, and two Tony nominations. Currently, she is gaining attention for her roles in Netflix's "The Diplomat" and the Apple TV+ series "Palm Royale."
Moreover, the Vanguard Award was conferred upon the Research Council of Makeup Artists (RCMA Makeup), recognizing their sustained contributions to the make-up community over the past sixty years. The owners of RCMA, JR and Christian Kehoe, expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the significance of their products in enhancing the creative designs crafted by makeup professionals.
Lifetime Achievement Recognitions
Two noteworthy individuals were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Todd McIntosh received the award for Make-Up, with Sarah Michelle Gellar presenting the honor, celebrating their successful work together on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Peter Tothpal, known for his contributions to films like "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," was awarded for exceptional achievement in hairstyling, presented by prominent make-up artists Steve La Porte and Deborah LaMia Denaver.
Fundraising for a Good Cause
With the unfortunate backdrop of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, the MUAHS event also emphasized philanthropy. The Guild raised funds to assist IATSE Union members affected by natural disasters through the Walsh/Di Tolla/Spivak Foundation.
