Seminar on Medical AI Development
On June 23, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host a significant seminar focused on the development of medical AI built upon Japan's largest medical database, the Millennium Medical Chart. This seminar features Dr. Hiroaki Yoshihara, a distinguished medical doctor and the representative director of the Life Data Initiative (LDI). His expertise will shed light on innovative strategies to enhance diagnostic accuracy, optimize treatment plans, relieve healthcare professionals' burdens, and accelerate new drug development.
Overview of the Seminar
The event is scheduled from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Attendees can participate in-person, via live streaming, or access recorded sessions afterward. The collaboration among patients and medical practitioners, regardless of their geographical locations, marks a significant step in healthcare. This initiative, called the Dolphin Project, initiated Japan's first Health Record (HER) system in Miyazaki and Kumamoto in 2002. Later, in 2015, the Millennium Medical Chart was established under the Next Generation Medical Infrastructure Act.
The seminar aims to demonstrate how the secondary utilization of accumulated medical information can lead to improved healthcare quality and safety, as well as promote clinical research. As of December 2024, 118 medical institutions have connected to the Millennium Medical Chart, with approximately 10 million unique registered patients. Notably, 2.67 million of these patients are available for secondary use, leading to 46 instances of paid secondary utilization and 15 publications in papers and conferences.
Highlights of the Lecture
The following key topics will be discussed:
1. The history behind building a medical data infrastructure for 10 million patients through the Millennium Medical Chart.
2. The reasoning behind the widespread usage of LDI's anonymized medical data across various enterprises.
3. Collaboration between the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's medical information network and the Millennium Medical Chart.
4. The complete structuring of medical databases facilitated by Large Language Models (LLMs) under the auspices of the Ministry of Health.
5. Proposals to the government aimed at enhancing the utilization of medical information.
6. Interactive Q&A session.
7. Networking opportunities for attendees to connect with speakers and other participants, which can foster business growth.
Participants will have the chance to exchange business cards and expand their professional networks, creating invaluable connections in the industry.
