FPL and Florida Prepaid College Foundation Empower 2,000 Students with Expanded Scholarships

Empowering Future Generations: FPL and Florida Prepaid College Foundation Expand Scholarship Opportunities

In a significant move to enhance educational opportunities for students in need, the Florida Prepaid College Foundation has announced an expansion of its partnership with Florida Power & Light Company (FPL). This collaboration aims to provide a total of 2,000 scholarships valued at over $14 million for students residing in Florida's highest-poverty communities, marking a major step towards breaking the cycle of generational poverty through education.

A Commitment to Education and Opportunity

This renewed commitment includes a remarkable investment of $4.2 million from the NextEra Energy Foundation, complemented by over $10 million generated through the scalable college access solutions established by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation. The NextEra Energy Foundation, a subsidiary of FPL, will contribute an additional $2.1 million to support 1,000 new two-year college scholarships over the next five years under the Path to Prosperity Scholarship Program. This initiative aims to create a clear and supported pathway to college education for underserved students, addressing one of the root causes of generational poverty: lack of access to educational opportunities.

Juliet Roulhac, Senior Director of External Affairs and Corporate Philanthropy for FPL, emphasized, "At FPL, we believe strong communities start with access to opportunity. Through our continued partnership with the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, we are investing in students who have the potential to succeed but may lack financial means. By combining scholarships with mentorship, we are not only supporting individual students; we are building a stronger, more resilient future for the communities we serve."

Understanding the Impact of Poverty on Education

Currently, over 700,000 children in Florida are living in poverty, with nearly half concentrated in just 15% of ZIP codes. These communities face numerous barriers that hinder academic achievement, health outcomes, and economic mobility. The Path to Prosperity Scholarship Program is designed to combat these challenges, pairing financial assistance with ongoing mentorship to ensure students not only succeed in high school but also graduate and continue their education.

Cynthia O'Connell, Director of the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, echoed the commitment to student success, stating, "The Florida Prepaid College Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that every Florida student has a pathway to education beyond high school. With FPL's continued investment, we can reach students in the communities that need it most, providing both financial support and the guidance necessary to turn college aspirations into reality."

Eligibility and Mentoring Support

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must exhibit academic effort and resilience while maintaining a crime-free and drug-free lifestyle, all while overcoming significant life challenges. In addition to financial resources, recipients will benefit from ongoing mentorship throughout their high school years, fostering a supportive environment conducive to their academic growth.

The Florida Prepaid College Foundation collaborates with reputable organizations, including Boys & Girls Clubs Florida Alliance, Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of Florida, and Take Stock in Children, to identify students in need and provide essential mentoring support. Scholarships are applicable at Florida's public colleges and universities, as well as technical, trade, and vocational institutions, providing students with various avenues to pursue higher education.

Looking to the Future

The Path to Prosperity Scholarship Program serves as a beacon of hope for Florida's most vulnerable students, aiming to ignite their ambitions and help them obtain a college degree. With a firm belief in the transformative power of education, this initiative not only empowers students but also invests in the future prosperity of communities across the state of Florida.
