In a significant move towards promoting a circular economy, Akiruno City, led by Mayor Hiroyuki Nakajima, has forged a partnership with Uridoki Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo. This collaboration, signed on July 1, 2025, aims to bolster reuse initiatives and tackle pressing environmental challenges.
As waste reduction and the shift toward a carbon-neutral society become increasingly critical issues, Uridoki recognizes the need for solutions that prioritize reuse over disposal. The company emphasizes the environmental burden caused by CO₂ emissions from the incineration of unwanted items, urging people to view these items not as waste but as valuable resources to be repurposed.
The growing awareness surrounding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has catalyzed the growth of the reuse market. Yet, consumers often feel uncertain about the fair prices for their items and may struggle to find reliable services. Uridoki's service, a comprehensive price matching platform, addresses these concerns by allowing users to compare multiple evaluations from professional assessors, ensuring they can engage in transactions with confidence.
The partnership aligns with Akiruno City's vision of reusing items instead of discarding them, ultimately contributing to waste reduction through collective small actions. Although Akiruno has made notable strides in reducing general waste, challenges remain. For instance, the volume of bulky waste has seen a staggering 20% increase, from 826 tons in FY 2016 to 995 tons in FY 2023. This agreement is expected to facilitate the flow of reusable items from bulky waste into the reuse market, enhancing overall waste management efforts.
Through this collaboration, Uridoki and Akiruno City aim to promote reuse within the community, invigorate the local economy, and provide transparent pricing for assessment services. By simplifying the process for Akiruno residents, the partnership will enable citizens to easily access Uridoki's matching service via the city’s official website (https://www.city.akiruno.tokyo.jp/0000018987.html). This will allow residents to submit requests for item evaluations directly, receiving quotes from multiple professional assessors.
The straightforward three-step process includes:
1.
Requesting an Evaluation: Residents fill in their items’ information and personal details for a combined assessment request.
2.
Receiving Quote Information: Up to 10 evaluation companies review the items and provide their assessed prices.
3.
Choosing an Assessor: After comparing prices, residents can select their preferred assessor to proceed with the sale.
This initiative not only encourages Akiruno residents to consider reuse as a viable option before disposal but also significantly contributes to resource conservation and waste reduction. Uridoki is committed to fostering a mindset of reuse in collaboration with Akiruno City and aims to extend this movement beyond mere waste reduction to create lasting impacts on the local economy and promote a sustainable society.
Located about 40 to 50 kilometers from Tokyo, Akiruno City is characterized by its serene natural environment, with the Akikawa and Hirai rivers winding through gently sloping hills and mountainous areas. As of June 1, 2023, the city houses a population of 78,898 and encompasses an area of 73.47 square kilometers.
Uridoki Co., Ltd., founded on December 1, 2014, operates a platform that connects sellers with prospective buyers. By leveraging technology and community engagement, Uridoki seeks to redefine waste management and resource utilization in urban areas.
