Lockheed Martin Wins Major Contract for Trident II Missile Development
The U.S. Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin a significant contract modification worth $383 million, aimed at enhancing the nation's deterrent capabilities at sea. This modification will focus on the development of the next generation of the Trident II Strategic Weapons System (SWS) D5 missile, which plays a pivotal role in maintaining U.S. strategic superiority.
Under this latest agreement, Lockheed Martin will spearhead the design of the upgraded missile known as the Trident II D5 Life Extension 2 (D5LE2), which is slated to be deployed on COLUMBIA-class submarines. These enhancements will ensure that the Trident II missile system remains effective and credible through 2084, addressing the evolving threats facing national security.
Jerry Mamrol, Vice President of Fleet Ballistic Missiles at Lockheed Martin, highlighted the importance of this project, stating, "The second life extension of the Trident D5 missile will enable the United States and the United Kingdom to sustain a credible deterrent through the Polaris Sales Agreement." Mamrol expressed pride in Lockheed Martin's ongoing partnership with the U.S. Navy as they navigate this critical phase of strategic deterrence.
The D5 missile is currently regarded as the most advanced ballistic missile globally, with deployments on both U.S. OHIO-class and U.K. VANGUARD-class submarines. Lockheed Martin, which has been a key player in naval missile development for over 70 years, underscored its commitment to supporting the Navy in sustaining these essential capabilities.
Expansion and Job Creation in Florida
In conjunction with the new contract, Lockheed Martin is also set to expand its operational footprint in Florida. The company is breaking ground on a state-of-the-art production facility in Titusville, which will be approximately 225,000 square feet in size. This facility will focus on manufacturing components for the D5LE2 submarine-launched missile.
This expansion will be a boon for the local economy, with Lockheed Martin projected to add around 300 skilled jobs in the region. Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly commented on this development, stating, "Florida continues to invest in our aerospace, aviation, and military defense industries, bringing high-skill, high-wage jobs to the state."
The new facility is expected to be operational by 2027, meeting Navy production needs while supporting its mission for the following six decades.
