Successful Climate Challenge Event in Paris
On June 26, 2025, Paris hosted the informative outreach event for the Climate Challenge (Hainan Baoting) initiative, marking two historic milestones: 50 years of diplomatic relations between China and the EU and the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement. This significant event was co-organized by the local government of the Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County in Hainan province and the Ningyuan Institute for Climate and Sustainable Development. It was backed by both Chinese and European climate leaders as well as the Chinese Embassy in France.
The event witnessed participation from over 100 representatives from more than 80 institutions across China and Europe. Notably, six key cooperation projects between China and Europe were signed, and presentations were made for the first batch of shortlisted projects within the Climate Challenge, energizing collaborations in green and low-carbon innovations. The engagement highlighted China's and Europe's commitment to exploring new avenues for sustainable development.
Keynotes and Insights
Mr. Xie Zhenhua, China's first Special Envoy for Climate Change, and Ms. Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation, delivered impactful video speeches emphasizing the urgency of enhancing climate action capabilities. Mr. Xie concentrated on the synergy between climate measures, healthcare, and marine conservation. He pointed out the critical importance of national planning, local measures, and international cooperation, noting that businesses and civil engagement play pivotal roles.
In her address, Ms. Tubiana highlighted the value of the Baoting Innovation Zone as a model of multilateral cooperation between China, Europe, and international organizations. She praised Baoting's ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and expressed hope that such initiatives would inspire other regions in their climate aspirations.
