Pure DC Announces Europe's Largest Data Center Lease for 2025 in Amsterdam

Pure DC Signs Major Data Center Lease in Amsterdam

In a groundbreaking announcement, Pure Data Centres Group (Pure DC) has signed Europe’s most extensive lease for a standalone hyperscale data center, set to impact the digital landscape in 2025. This ambitious project, which will be located in Westpoort, Amsterdam, involves a colossal investment of over €1 billion and is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs, heralding a new era for digital infrastructure in the region.

Project Overview

The hyperscale client will lease the entire 78 megawatt (MW) campus, which requires significant resources and investment. Pure DC has successfully acquired the site and secured the necessary planning permissions along with a private substation capable of providing a robust power supply of 100 MVA. The site acquisition involves a long-term lease with the Port of Amsterdam, showcasing the complexities and strategic negotiations necessary to finalize such a major infrastructure project.

The developments at this site will not only accommodate substantial digital capacity but will also play a vital role in enhancing the energy resilience of Amsterdam, a city recognized for its increasing demand for digital services. The challenge to meet this demand has necessitated innovative solutions and partnerships over several months, culminating in this landmark agreement.

Economic Impact

The planned data center will generate considerable job opportunities directly alongside more than a thousand jobs in the extended supply chain. Additionally, Pure DC aims to create approximately 80 skilled permanent positions on-site, ranging from engineers and maintenance to security and administrative staff. The investment will boost the local economy and increase demand for skilled labor, with efforts to prioritize local businesses and talent.

Design and Infrastructure

The Pure DC data center, known as AMS01, will consist of three towering structures each standing 85 meters tall. They will be powered by an already operational private substation directly connecting to the 50 kV network. Each tower is set to house 26 MW of data hall capacity, designed specifically for high-density computing with state-of-the-art cooling systems. Impressively, this facility aims to meet the Dutch energy efficiency objective with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rate of 1.2.

The construction of data halls is anticipated to commence in January 2026, ensuring the facility aligns with the rapid pace of technology growth demands.

Strategic Importance

Dame Dawn Childs, the CEO of Pure Data Centres, emphasized the strategic significance of this project. Amsterdam is noted for its severe digital infrastructure constraints, and Pure DC's initiative demonstrates its capability to unlock new capacities while maintaining quality and low-latency services. This agreement not only represents a business achievement but also stands as a model for transforming challenging assets into viable solutions for stakeholders such as local authorities, potential clients, and the supply chain.

Community Commitment

In alignment with its expansion, Pure DC is dedicated to engaging with local communities around its present and future operational sites. Plans are underway to introduce programs akin to previous projects, fostering partnerships with local educational institutions to offer training, career counseling, and outreach initiatives that empower community members. Additionally, Pure DC is committed to supporting local charities and collaborating on environmental conservation projects, enriching the communities where it operates.

Conclusion

With Pure DC's ambitious plans for the Amsterdam data center, the future looks promising for both the company and the local community. It is a pivotal moment for digital infrastructure development in the region, opening doors for technological advancement while promising sustainability and economic growth.
