Okayama University Strengthens Research Management Training Through Collaboration with Shimane University

On May 29, 2026, Okayama University held a significant exchange of ideas with Shimane University at its Tsushima Campus. This collaborative meeting was aimed at connecting potential trainees under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s initiative to bolster research management personnel. The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance the research capabilities in universities across Japan by fostering effective research management resources. It seeks to address the quantitative shortage and improve the quality of such professionals while establishing appropriate treatment and career pathways.

The meeting marked the first acceptance of trainees from Shimane University, scheduled to begin in October. Participants shared hopes and expectations from both institutions, discussing the desired framework for the training. Key attendees included Wataru Inoue from Shimane’s Open Innovation Promotion Headquarters, along with other notable URAs (University Research Administrators) and university officials from both sides. Dialogue covered various essential points, including the anticipated training content and the future perspectives on research management personnel.

At the meeting's opening, Inoue expressed his ambitions for the upcoming training. The discussion continued with Katou, another URA from Shimane, explaining the current state and challenges regarding their Open Innovation initiative, alongside their expectations for the training. Okayama University representatives then outlined the training programs available, focusing on the dishes that Inoue had identified: Research IR, analysis and formation of new research core organizations, regional platform training in digital sectors, and project management training. Detailed descriptions of these training offerings were provided by the respective coordinators.

The discussions also delved into the complexities concerning the acceptance process and shared obstacles faced by both universities, including the lack of research-driven enterprises in the region, which complicates the formation of large-scale collaborative research partnerships. Both parties expressed a desire to collaboratively explore solutions for these issues during the upcoming training.

Nobuhito Sato, the deputy vice president responsible for research and industry-academia collaboration, remarked on the significance of accepting trainees from Shimane University. He noted, "It is a great honor to receive candidates from Shimane University. As local national universities in the Chugoku region, discussing shared challenges and potential paths forward is invaluable not only for managing this initiative but also in terms of university governance. Our institutions must evolve, with the core being our talent pool. We aim to actively drive transformation while considering the present and future of research management personnel. We look forward to the collaborations between Okayama University and Shimane University."

In the future, Okayama University remains committed to strengthening partnerships with various stakeholders to enhance the training and operational management of research personnel. This enhancement will be realized through agile organizational and institutional reforms that break away from traditional constraints. The university encourages support for its ongoing challenges to co-create with the region and planet, facilitating societal transformations as a distinctive research university at the heart of its locality.
