Alveo Technologies and Global Animal Health Partner for Avian Flu Surveillance in Egypt
Alveo Technologies, a pioneer in molecular detection and diagnostics, announced a significant collaboration with Global Animal Health (GAH) aimed at enhancing avian influenza surveillance in Egypt. Set to mark an unprecedented large-scale deployment of on-site and real-time molecular diagnostics, this partnership introduces the Alveo Sense™ avian influenza test across the nation, fundamentally transforming poultry disease management.
A Revolutionary Approach to Avian Flu Monitoring
The initial phase of this deployment consists of 1,000 Alveo Sense analyzers and 10,000 consumable test cartridges, ensuring widespread access to rapid on-site tests for avian influenza throughout Egypt. This initiative represents a novel model for monitoring avian influenza, shifting testing efforts from centralized laboratories to direct on-field applications, thereby expediting the response to outbreaks.
Egypt is now the first country globally to roll out the Alveo Sense platform at this scale, establishing a prototype for national disease surveillance and swift response. Sponsored by the private sector and backed by government support, the initial rollout aims to cover approximately 10% of all farms located along major migratory bird pathways.
"Avian flu is not merely a farm-specific issue; it's a systemic global challenge," stated Shaun Holt, CEO of Alveo Technologies. "By enabling large-scale quality molecular testing and real-time data collection, we're building a national defense system for food safety and public health. This empowers farmers, producers, and veterinarians on the ground to shift from a reactive stance—waiting days for results while the virus spreads—to proactive surveillance and intervention. We are proud to partner with Global Animal Health to deliver this life-saving technology to Egypt, a hub of the regional poultry industry."
Accelerated Results for Enhanced Decision-Making
Mohamed Hussein, CEO of Global Animal Health Egypt, emphasized the transformational capacity that the partnership brings to animal health stakeholders within Egypt. “For the first time, producers and veterinarians will receive confirmed molecular results of laboratory quality in less than an hour directly on the farm. This advancement fundamentally reshapes on-field decision-making, accelerates response times, and ensures authorities have access to reliable data at critical moments. By combining speed with scientific rigor, this collaboration offers a dependable tool that leads to improved outcomes across the sector.”
The risk posed by avian influenza continues to escalate globally, threatening poultry production, food security, and public health. Recent outbreaks have led to the culling of hundreds of millions of birds worldwide, causing substantial increases in poultry and egg prices, along with significant government compensation costs. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has repeatedly emphasized that early detection and rapid containment are the most effective tools for limiting the spread of the virus.
Despite this, the majority of regions still rely on centralized laboratories for avian influenza testing, with results often taking three to five days—a concerning delay, as the virus can travel up to five kilometers in just two days, quickly spreading between farms and communities while jeopardizing employee health. Alveo’s portable testing system has the potential to fundamentally change this paradigm by delivering high-precision, sensitive tests for relevant avian influenza strains on-site in approximately 45 minutes. Documented deployments have shown that the Alveo system enabled containment actions to commence several days earlier than traditional workflows, thereby supporting efforts to prevent secondary infections on farms, reducing human exposure, and averting estimated regional losses worth millions of dollars.
This value extends to both vaccinated and unvaccinated flocks, amplifying the solution's utility across various production systems and international commercial environments. Alveo's platform facilitates the establishment of a data-driven surveillance network, where each test result can be wirelessly uploaded with timestamped and geolocated data, providing veterinarians and regulatory authorities with near-real-time visibility into emerging risks and outbreak dynamics.
Collectively, these capabilities allow for earlier intervention, precise targeted containment, and improved coordination among farmers, producers, veterinarians, and governmental agencies, thereby protecting animal health, stabilizing food supply, reducing human health risks, and mitigating economic disruptions.
Expanding Horizons for Disease Surveillance
The initiative in Egypt marks the first step toward introducing Alveo's decentralized avian influenza testing system across the Middle East and North Africa, in partnership with GAH, in a region where increased poultry production density, migratory bird routes, and cross-border trade heighten the systemic risks posed by the virus.
The Alveo Sense system is currently available in 32 countries, actively utilized across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Alveo Technologies is dedicated to redefining molecular diagnostics, making swift and accurate pathogen detection accessible at the Point of Need™—from farms and clinics to agricultural and industrial environments. Our portable, multiplex-compatible Alveo Sense™ platform employs patented direct electrical detection of nucleic acid amplification to provide rapid, cost-effective results outside laboratory settings.
By decentralizing molecular diagnostics, Alveo paves the way for earlier detection, faster decision-making, and improved outcomes in animal and human health, food security, and supply chain resilience. With Alveo, Know Sooner, Act Faster™. For more information, visit alveotechnologies.com.
