Understanding Natural Ingredients: Insights into Consumer Preferences in Skincare
In recent years, there has been a notable shift towards naturalism among consumers, particularly in the realm of skincare. Despite this growing trend, a significant number of individuals struggle to differentiate between terms like "natural ingredients" and "organic ingredients," with only about 10% capable of clearly defining this difference.
The natural skincare market is seeing a surge in demand for products that are gentle on the skin while being environmentally conscious. This has led to increased complexity in the options available, making informed purchasing decisions more challenging for consumers. In order to better understand these challenges, Myufull, a brand specializing in natural skincare, conducted a survey targeting women in their 30s to early 40s who use natural cosmetics.
Survey Findings: Information Sources for Skincare Choices
The survey revealed that more than half of the participants, specifically 52%, turn to social media platforms like Instagram, X, and TikTok to gather information about skincare products. This shows that consumers are heavily relying on social networks for advice and recommendations. Following social media, 46.6% of respondents preferred beauty-related websites and blogs as their primary sources of information. Other sources included physical stores (43.8%), friends and family (28.0%), and magazines (23.2%).
Desired Effects of Natural Skincare Products
The survey also aimed to uncover what consumers seek from their natural skincare products. Approximately one-third (33.2%) identified "moisturization" as their top priority. Other desired effects included anti-aging (28.0%), skin texture improvement (17.4%), whitening (15.2%), and relaxation effects (6.2%). This data indicates that many users initially turn to natural skincare in response to age-related skin changes or common skin issues, with a particular emphasis on moisturizing effects.
Challenges in Selecting Natural Skincare
When asked about dissatisfaction or challenges with natural skincare products, the predominant concern, expressed by about 31.6% of respondents, was a lack of clarity on what criteria to use when making their selections. The second most common issue related to product pricing (25.8%), followed by a perceived delay in seeing results (20.6%), and limited availability of products (15.0%). Only a small percentage indicated they had no particular issues (6.8%).
This indicates that there is a significant need for enhanced information dissemination through social media and specialized media outlets to assist consumers in making informed choices. Furthermore, it shows a rising demand for product development focused on moisturizing, anti-aging, and skin texture improvement to address consumers' varied needs.
Differentiating Between Natural and Organic Ingredients
One of the key areas of confusion highlighted in the survey was the distinction between "natural ingredients" and "organic ingredients." Only 12.2% of respondents claimed to fully understand the difference, suggesting a widespread lack of knowledge. Both terms refer to ingredients sourced from nature, yet they hold different meanings.
- - Natural Ingredients: These are derived from natural sources such as plants, animals, and minerals, but may involve chemical processing during extraction. This term is broadly used and appears in many natural skincare products.
- - Organic Ingredients: These refer to ingredients that are extracted using minimal chemical processing, relying primarily on physical methods such as pressing or distillation. Products labeled with organic ingredients typically align with a stronger emphasis on environmental consciousness and are preferred by those looking to avoid synthetic chemicals.
For consumers prioritizing skin safety and environmental sustainability, opting for products with organic ingredients would be prudent.
